Farmers Face Decline in Summer Crop Areas for 2026

This summer, farmers across the region are grappling with a significant decline in the area sown for key crops compared to last year. The latest agricultural report reveals a troubling trend, with the total area sown dropping to 64.10 lakh hectares for the current year, down from 83.92 lakh hectares in the final assessment of the last summer season in 2025.

The stark decrease impacts various crops, with rice, pulses, and oilseeds all seeing reduced cultivation areas. Specifically, the area for rice has fallen from 33.28 lakh hectares to just 30.59 lakh hectares, representing a decrease of 1.72 lakh hectares over the previous year.

Pulses Show Mixed Results

Pulses, a vital source of protein for millions, displayed a more mixed outcome. The area allocated for pulses overall dropped to 11.54 lakh hectares from 27.07 lakh hectares, driven primarily by the fluctuations in the sowing of greengram and blackgram. Greengram’s area decreased slightly to 8.47 lakh hectares while blackgram saw a slight rise from 2.96 to 2.78 lakh hectares.

Coarse Cereals and Oilseeds Decline

The report also highlights a concerning trend for coarse cereals, including jowar, bajra, and maize, which collectively decreased their sown area. Maize remains a notable crop with an area of 8.46 lakh hectares, though it reflects a small drop from the previous year’s 8.50 lakh hectares. The total area under coarse cereals decreased by 0.97 lakh hectares compared to the last year.

In the oilseed category, farmers similarly reduced their sown area, with groundnut and sunflower recording drops in cultivation. Groundnut saw its area decrease from 4.20 to 4.77 lakh hectares, while the available area for sunflower is nearly stagnant this year, remaining at 0.39 lakh hectares.

Future Challenges for Farmers

This decline in crop sowing area raises concerns about food security and farmers’ income, as they navigate these adverse conditions. Agricultural experts suggest that environmental factors, labor shortages, and economic challenges are contributing to this decline in cultivated land.

Restoring the sown area to previous levels will require concerted efforts and support from both government and agricultural organizations. As the season unfolds, farmers remain hopeful for better yields despite the current challenges they face.
