Empowering Women in Science: A Path to Viksit Bharat

In a pivotal address at the National Science Day Celebration 2026 held at the INSA Auditorium in New Delhi, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized the crucial role of women in science as “catalysts” for India’s ambition towards becoming a developed nation, or Viksit Bharat. He asserted that the progress of science and national development are intertwined, highlighting the necessity of women’s inclusion to sustain India’s innovation momentum.

Dr. Singh’s remarks came under the theme “Women in Science: Catalyzing Viksit Bharat,” where he championed the need for a scientific ecosystem that nurtures talent across genders and regions. He noted the increasing representation of women in research, leadership, and innovation sectors, stressing that policy support and institutional dedication are vital for transforming the landscape of Indian science.

According to Dr. Singh, India’s science policy is evolving towards fostering enabling environments rather than merely celebrating isolated achievements. He underscored the importance of ongoing institutional support, early mentorship, and pathways for translating research into real-world applications, showcasing initiatives aimed at enhancing India’s scientific foundation.

Key Initiatives Launched to Propel Scientific Growth

Several notable initiatives were unveiled during the event, including the Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster and the ANRF-Venture Centre Outreach Initiative. The Mission Innovation India Report was released, alongside the book _Indigenous Architecture of Northeast India_. A significant technology transfer was also completed, introducing a copper-doped nano titania coating for heritage stone preservation to M/s Rebuild Technologies Services Pvt. Ltd.

This innovative Copper-Doped Nano Titania (Cu–TiO₂) coating enhances the longevity and aesthetic appeal of heritage stone monuments, proving effective against UV damage and retaining high hydrophobic performance even after extended exposure. Such advancements signify a commitment to marrying scientific research with essential societal applications.

Engaging Future Scientists Through New Programs

Another exciting announcement included the launch of the “Engage with Science” Programme by the National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC). This initiative aims to provide immersive experiences for students in Classes 8 and 9 at 16 DST autonomous institutions, spanning seven areas, including Materials Science and Earth Sciences, thus inspiring future scientific leaders.

During the event, Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, reiterated the need for a robust and inclusive research ecosystem to bridge the gap between scientific advances and national needs. Dr. Rajesh Gokhale, Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology, further emphasized the necessity for integrating biotechnology with national development objectives.

Dr. Jitendra Singh concluded the ceremony by asserting that National Science Day represents not just a ceremonial event but a reaffirmation of India’s scientific determination. He called for continued efforts to empower women scientists, enhance indigenous innovation, and preserve cultural heritage, ensuring that the spirit of National Science Day resonates throughout the year.
