Empowering Rural Women Through DAY-NRLM
The Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) is making significant strides in empowering women across India. This initiative focuses on enhancing the business capabilities, technological access, and financial resources of women Self-Help Groups (SHGs). Since its inception, DAY-NRLM has successfully mobilized over 10.05 crore women into approximately 90.87 lakh SHGs. This article explores the various programs under DAY-NRLM, highlighting their impact on rural women’s livelihoods and the overall economy.
Supporting Small Enterprises with SVEP
The Start-up Village Entrepreneurship Programme (SVEP) is a vital component of DAY-NRLM. It aims to assist SHG women and their families in establishing small enterprises. As of October 2024, SVEP has supported the creation of 3.13 lakh rural enterprises. This initiative not only fosters entrepreneurship but also promotes self-reliance among women in rural areas.
Through SVEP, women receive training and resources to start and manage their businesses effectively. The program encourages innovation and creativity, allowing women to explore various sectors such as agriculture, handicrafts, and services. Additionally, SHG women are trained to serve as Banking Correspondent Sakhis, which enhances access to banking services. These women facilitate deposits, credit, remittances, pensions, and insurance for their communities. Currently, 1,35,127 Banking Correspondent Sakhis are deployed, significantly improving financial inclusion in rural areas.
Financial Support and Capitalization
DAY-NRLM provides essential financial support to strengthen SHGs. The program offers a Revolving Fund ranging from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 30,000 per SHG and a Community Investment Fund of up to Rs. 2.50 lakh per SHG. This funding is crucial for building the financial management capacity of SHGs and helps them establish a credit history.
As a result, SHGs have successfully leveraged bank credit amounting to Rs. 9.71 lakh crore by November 2024. To further reduce the cost of bank credit for women SHGs, DAY-NRLM offers interest subvention on loans. This financial backing empowers women to invest in their businesses and improve their livelihoods. The total capitalization support provided to SHG members has reached an impressive Rs. 48,290 crores, enabling many women to break the cycle of poverty and achieve financial independence.
Training and Capacity Building Initiatives
Training and capacity-building programs are integral to the success of DAY-NRLM. The initiative conducts regular training sessions for SHG members, supported by resource organizations, academicians, and government departments. These programs focus on enhancing the skills of SHG members, Federation Leaders, and Community Resource Persons (CRPs).
The training covers various aspects, including financial literacy, business management, and marketing strategies. By building awareness and skills, DAY-NRLM ensures that women are well-equipped to manage their enterprises effectively. The Ministry of Rural Development employs Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) strategies to promote these training programs, ensuring broad outreach and impact. This comprehensive approach not only strengthens SHGs but also fosters a sense of community and collaboration among women.
Promoting Producer Groups for Women
To further support small and marginal women producers, DAY-NRLM facilitates the formation of producer groups at both village and district levels. These groups serve as informal entities that empower women to collaborate and enhance their production capabilities. As of now, DAY-NRLM has established 1,245 women-owned producer enterprises and farmer producer companies, benefiting around 15 lakh women members.
Additionally, 1.78 lakh producer groups have been promoted, covering approximately 32 lakh women members. These initiatives not only enhance the economic status of women but also promote sustainable practices in agriculture and production. By working together, women can share resources, knowledge, and market access, leading to improved livelihoods and community development.
