ECI Unveils Election Schedule for Five States, Ensures Smooth Voting

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially announced the schedule for the upcoming General Elections, set to take place on March 15, 2026, across the states of Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal. In a bid to uphold the integrity of the electoral process, the Commission has directed the State and Union Territory governments to adhere strictly to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

To facilitate violence-free and fair elections, the Commission has engaged in multiple review meetings with Chief Secretaries, Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs), Directors General of Police (DGPs), and senior officials from the states and UTs preparing for the elections. These discussions also included leadership from enforcement agencies to ensure a smooth electoral process devoid of intimidation or inducement.

Robust Monitoring Measures Implemented

In a proactive response to potential electoral malpractices, the ECI has deployed over 2,728 Flying Squad Teams (FSTs). These teams are tasked with addressing complaints swiftly—within a remarkable timeframe of just 100 minutes. Additionally, more than 3,142 Static Surveillance Teams (SSTs) have been strategically positioned to conduct surprise checks at various locations. Notably, special initiatives are also targeting the manufacture and distribution of illicit liquor to further safeguard the election integrity.

Significant Seizures of Illicit Items

As part of the Election Seizure Management System (ESMS), which was activated on February 26, 2026, data compiled up to April 27, 2026, reveals extensive seizures of illicit inducements in West Bengal alone. The state reported substantial amounts of cash and contraband items that threaten the fairness of the election.

According to the ECI’s report, West Bengal has seen cash seizures amounting to ₹30 crores, alongside a staggering 4,846,183 liters of illicit liquor valued at ₹126.85 crores. The total value of seizures, including drugs and precious metals, has now exceeded ₹510 crores. This figure surpasses the previous record of ₹339 crores in illicit seizures during the General Elections in 2021.

The ECI’s rigorous efforts reflect its commitment to conducting clean elections, ensuring every voter can participate without fear of violence or coercion.
