Dutch Naval Ship Visits Kochi, Strengthens Maritime Ties with India

The Royal Netherlands Navy’s frigate, HNLMS De Ruyter (F804), docked at Kochi on May 4, 2026, marking an important step in enhancing maritime relations between the Netherlands and India. The ship’s arrival coincided with a high-level delegation trip that included Major General Rob De Wit, the Deputy Commander of the Royal Netherlands Navy, and Ms. Marisa Gerards, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. This visit reflects ongoing efforts to foster collaboration in naval operations in the Indo-Pacific region.

Upon reaching Kochi Harbour, HNLMS De Ruyter was met by Fast Interceptor Craft from the Indian Navy, signifying the warm relationship between the two naval forces. A ceremonial reception, featuring a Naval Band, added to the festivities of the day. Currently, the frigate is on a five-month deployment in the Indo-Pacific, during which it will participate in various maritime exercises alongside partner nations.

Significance of the Visit

The visit of HNLMS De Ruyter and the accompanying delegation underscores the commitment of both nations to strengthen their maritime ties. Previously, the Deputy Commander of the Royal Netherlands Navy engaged at the International Ocean Security Conference (IONS Conclave of Chiefs) held in Visakhapatnam in February 2026, demonstrating a commitment to regional security.

During their time in Kochi, the Netherlands delegation, including General De Wit and Ambassador Gerards, paid a visit to RAdm Prakash Gopalan, Chief of Staff of the Southern Naval Command. They discussed various topics of mutual interest in the maritime domain, aiming to boost cooperation between their respective navies.

Honoring the Fallen

A particularly poignant moment during the visit occurred on National Remembrance Day in the Netherlands, when Maj Gen De Wit and Ambassador Gerards laid wreaths at the SNC War Memorial, honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Future Engagements

The delegation is scheduled for a range of bilateral engagements designed to improve training cooperation and share best practices. They will explore various professional training establishments at the Southern Naval Command, witnessing demonstrations of advanced simulators and training infrastructure. Their itinerary also includes a visit to Cochin Shipyard Limited, where they will gain insights into India’s shipbuilding capabilities and potential avenues for industrial cooperation.

As the time of departure approaches, HNLMS De Ruyter will conduct a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with an Indian naval vessel, enhancing interoperability and operational synergy between the two navies. This collaborative effort not only bolsters defense ties but also enriches the partnership between India and the Netherlands.
