Devnimori Relics Exposition Strengthens India-Sri Lanka Ties

The arrival of the Holy Devnimori Relics of Lord Buddha in Sri Lanka heralds a significant moment in the spiritual and cultural relationship between the two nations. The relics, which were transported by a special Indian Air Force flight, received full state honors upon their arrival, reflecting the deep-rooted ties shared through their Buddhist heritage.

Accompanying the sacred relics was a distinguished Indian delegation led by Gujarat’s Governor, Shri Acharya Devvrat, and Deputy Chief Minister, Shri Harsh Sanghavi. Senior Buddhist monks, government officials, and other key dignitaries were present, highlighting the importance of the event.

Cultural Significance of the Exposition

The exposition of the Holy Devnimori Relics was inaugurated on February 4, 2026, at the revered Gangaramaya Temple in Colombo. The event was graced by Sri Lanka’s President, Shri Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who was joined by the Gujarati delegation and the Chief Incumbent of the temple, Ven. Dr. Kirinde Assaji Thero. This momentous occasion was attended by several senior figures from the Sri Lankan government, including the Minister of Buddhasasana, Hon. (Dr.) Hiniduma Sunil Senevi, and the Minister of Health & Mass Media, Hon. (Dr.) Nalinda Jayatissa.

Exhibitions and Public Access

As a part of the exposition, two exhibits titled “Unearthing the Sacred Piprahwa” and “Sacred Relic and Cultural Engagement of Contemporary India” were inaugurated, further enriching the cultural experience for attendees. The holy relics, after being ceremonially received with traditional rites, were enshrined at the temple. Starting from February 5, 2026, the exposition will be open for public veneration, allowing devotees from Sri Lanka and around the world to pay their respects.

The arrival of the Sacred Relics coincides with Sri Lanka’s 78th Independence Day, enhancing the occasion’s significance. This exposition marks the first public display of the Devnimori Relics outside India, following past exhibitions of the Kapilavastu Relics in 2012 and the Sarnath Relics in 2018, both of which occurred in Sri Lanka.

Enduring Bonds

The exposition stands as a powerful reminder of the timeless teachings of Lord Buddha, emphasizing values like compassion, peace, and non-violence. It underscores the enduring civilizational relationship between India and Sri Lanka and serves to further strengthen cultural, spiritual, and personal connections between the two nations.
