Developers Leverage Apple’s Local AI Models in iOS 26
Earlier this year, Apple unveiled its Foundation Models framework at WWDC 2025, enabling developers to integrate the company’s local AI models into their applications without incurring inference costs. This framework includes features like guided generation and tool calling, enhancing app functionality. As iOS 26 is being rolled out, developers are updating their apps to incorporate these local AI capabilities, which, while smaller than those from competitors like OpenAI and Google, significantly improve user experience without overhauling existing workflows.
Innovative Applications Leveraging AI
Several apps have already begun to utilize Apple’s Foundation Models, showcasing the versatility of this new technology. One notable example is the Lil Artist app, designed to foster creativity in children. Developers Arima Jain and Aman Jain have introduced an AI story creator that allows users to select characters and themes, with the app generating stories based on these choices. This feature utilizes Apple’s local AI model for text generation, enhancing the interactive learning experience for kids.
Another app, Daylish, is in the prototype stage of integrating AI to suggest emojis for events in its daily planner. This feature aims to streamline the user experience by automatically providing relevant emojis based on event titles. Similarly, the finance tracking app MoneyCoach has implemented two AI-driven features: one that offers insights into spending habits and another that suggests categories for quick entry of expenses. These enhancements are designed to simplify financial management for users.

The LookUp app, focused on vocabulary building, has added two new modes powered by Apple’s AI models. The first mode generates examples related to specific words, prompting users to explain their usage in sentences. Additionally, the app now features a map view that illustrates the origins of words, enriching the learning experience. Meanwhile, the Tasks app has incorporated AI to automatically suggest tags for entries and detect recurring tasks, allowing users to manage their to-do lists more efficiently.
The journaling app Day One is also leveraging Apple’s AI capabilities to enhance user engagement. It now offers features that highlight key moments in entries and suggest titles, encouraging users to reflect more deeply on their writing. Similarly, the recipe app Crouton uses AI to suggest tags for recipes and break down cooking instructions into manageable steps, making meal preparation easier for users.
Enhancing Daily Life with AI
Several other applications are also harnessing the power of Apple’s local AI models. The digital signing app Signeasy extracts key insights from contracts, providing users with concise summaries of documents. Dark Noise, an app designed for ambient soundscapes, allows users to describe desired sound environments in a few words, generating customized soundscapes based on their input.
Newly launched apps like Lights Out, which tracks Formula 1 races, utilize on-device AI to summarize race commentary. The note-taking app Capture offers category suggestions as users type, enhancing organization and efficiency. Weather-tracking app Lumy provides users with AI-generated weather-related suggestions, while CardPointers helps users manage credit card expenses by answering queries about their cards and offers.
As more developers adopt Apple’s Foundation Models, the potential for innovation in app functionality continues to grow. The integration of local AI models is set to enhance user experiences across various domains, from education to finance and beyond.
