Delhi Airport’s Terminal 2 to Close for Repairs

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport is set to undergo significant changes as Terminal 2 will close for repairs starting April 15, 2025, for approximately four months. During this period, all domestic flights currently operating from Terminal 2 will be relocated to Terminal 1, which will operate at full capacity. Airlines such as IndiGo and Akasa have announced their transition plans to ensure a smooth experience for travelers.
IndiGo and Akasa Transition to Terminal 1
IndiGo, one of India’s largest airlines, confirmed that effective April 15, 2025, all flights arriving at and departing from Terminal 2 will be moved to Terminal 1. The airline is taking proactive steps to inform passengers about this change. IndiGo is reaching out to travelers through SMS, calls, and emails, advising them to check their departure and arrival terminals via the airline’s website or mobile app.
Similarly, Akasa has announced that all its flights to and from Delhi will also operate from Terminal 1 starting on the same date. The airline urges passengers to verify their flight status before heading to the airport. This transition aims to streamline operations and enhance passenger convenience during the repair period at Terminal 2.
Baggage Transfer Trials Underway
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) is currently conducting trials to facilitate the transfer of check-in baggage for connecting passengers between Terminal 3 (T3) and Terminal 1 (T1). As T1 prepares to become fully operational, DIAL is implementing measures to ease the transfer process for passengers traveling between domestic and international flights.
DIAL’s CEO, Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, stated that once the new system is in place, passengers arriving at T3 from international destinations will no longer need to carry their baggage to T1 after customs clearance. Instead, they can drop their baggage at T3, and the airline will ensure it is transferred to T1 through the airside. This initiative aims to reduce the inconvenience faced by travelers during the transition.
Addressing Passenger Concerns
Despite these improvements, the lack of an air train connecting T1 and T3 remains a challenge for passengers. Currently, international arrivals must complete immigration and customs clearance before rechecking their baggage for connecting flights. DIAL has assured the civil aviation ministry that they are committed to ensuring passengers can transfer from T1 to T3 within 120 minutes.
As passenger traffic continues to rise, particularly with the expansion of networks by airlines like Air India and IndiGo, DIAL is focused on enhancing the overall travel experience. However, the absence of a direct connection between T1 and T3 poses ongoing challenges for smooth transitions, making it crucial for the airport to implement effective solutions in the interim.
