DDWS announces Launch of WhatsApp Version of SBM Academy

The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS), under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, recently held a significant meeting with representatives from 22 States and Union Territories. The primary focus was to review the findings of the Swachh Survekshan Grameen (SSG) 2024 and to strategize for the upcoming Annual Implementation Plan (AIP) for 2025-26, which is set to commence in February. This meeting is crucial as it aims to accelerate progress toward Sampoorna Swachhata, emphasizing improved waste management systems across rural India.
Key Discussions on SSG Findings
During the meeting, participants engaged in open discussions about the key recommendations derived from the SSG findings. These discussions aimed to ensure that the strategies developed are evidence-based and effectively address the sanitation challenges faced by rural communities. The SSG findings provide valuable insights into the current state of sanitation and hygiene in these areas. By focusing on data-driven approaches, the DDWS aims to enhance the effectiveness of sanitation programs.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders. Officials stressed the need for cross-sector collaboration to safeguard the sanitation gains achieved so far. This collaboration is essential for advancing waste management solutions and ensuring that rural sanitation remains a priority. The insights gained from the SSG will serve as a foundation for future initiatives, guiding the implementation of effective sanitation policies and practices.
Launch of WhatsApp-Based SBM Academy
A significant highlight of the meeting was the launch of the WhatsApp version of the SBM Academy. This innovative platform aims to enhance accessibility and engagement with training content related to sanitation and hygiene. The revamped SBM Academy course has undergone a substantial overhaul, incorporating interactive elements to make learning more practical and dynamic.
With the WhatsApp-based model, users will receive reminders for course completion and regular updates in the form of videos, audio clips, and images. This approach makes the learning process more engaging and user-friendly. Participants can complete their training through various methods, including Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) and WhatsApp messaging. Currently available in Hindi and English, the platform allows users to earn a training certificate upon achieving a minimum score of 50 out of 100. This initiative not only enhances the learning experience but also aims to create a verified database of trained SBM manpower, strengthening capacity-building efforts across rural India.
Commitment to Sustainable Sanitation
As the meeting coincided with Martyrs’ Day on January 30, officials reflected on the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, who prioritized sanitation as a national concern. The discussions emphasized the need for ongoing commitment to sanitation and hygiene, aligning with Gandhi’s vision. The DDWS reiterated its dedication to strengthening local governance, fostering community participation, and adopting innovative approaches for sustainable sanitation outcomes.
The AIP process, which begins in February, will build on the deliberations from this meeting. The insights gained will help shape strategic actions and policy alignment across all States and Union Territories. The DDWS remains committed to ensuring that rural sanitation continues to improve, addressing the needs of communities effectively.
