Crop Sowing Area Sees Notable Changes in 2026 Report
Recent agricultural data reveals significant fluctuations in crop sowing areas across various categories for the year 2026 compared to previous years. The report indicates a decrease in rice cultivation, contrasting a notable growth in pulses and oilseeds, painting a diverse picture of agricultural trends.
Overview of Sown Areas
According to the latest statistics, the area sown for rice has seen a decline, with the final summer area for 2025 recorded at 33.28 lakh hectares, dropping to 30.64 lakh hectares this year, which is a decrease of 1.66 lakh hectares from the previous year’s figures. Despite this, pulses have experienced a considerable increase in sowing area, jumping from 27.07 lakh hectares in 2025 to 15.47 lakh hectares in 2026, demonstrating a significant rise amidst various pulses, particularly greengram and blackgram.
Pulse Planting Patterns
Pulses have shown a mixed growth pattern this year. For instance, greengram planting surged from 23.49 lakh hectares in 2025 to 11.73 lakh hectares in the current year, aided by favorable weather conditions. Blackgram also contributed positively with numbers rising from 3.58 lakh hectares last year to 3.45 lakh hectares. Other pulses accounted for 0.30 lakh hectares, marking a notable entry in this casting.
Coarse Cereals and Oilseeds Outlook
The area designated for coarse cereals, also referred to as Shree Anna, displayed modest growth, with 13.81 lakh hectares reported in 2026 compared to 14.06 lakh hectares in the previous year. Maize appeared as a prominent crop in this category, with a planting area of 8.46 lakh hectares, signifying resilience in the face of challenging agricultural conditions.
Notable increases were also recorded in the oilseeds sector, with total sown areas expanding from 9.51 lakh hectares in 2025 to 9.14 lakh hectares. This rise is largely driven by groundnut, which now occupies 5.51 lakh hectares, compared to 4.20 lakh hectares previously. Sunflower and other oilseeds also showed positive trends, although sesamum witnessed a drop to 3.18 lakh hectares.
