Commitment to Quality: A New Era for India
In a significant address at the 78th Foundation Day of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in New Delhi, Union Minister Shri Pralhad Joshi emphasized the vital role of quality in fostering trust and driving innovation. He highlighted the Indian government’s commitment to ensuring that citizens receive safe, reliable, and high-quality products. This commitment aligns with the guiding principle of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Vikas, and Sabka Prayas,” which translates to “Together with all, Trust of all, Development for all, and Efforts of all.” The minister’s remarks underscore the importance of quality as a cornerstone of India’s progress and development.
The Government’s Commitment to Quality
Shri Joshi articulated that the Indian government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is dedicated to creating a robust quality ecosystem. He pointed out that the implementation of Quality Control Orders (QCOs) is a crucial aspect of this ecosystem. The continuous expansion of these orders reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing product quality across various sectors. The minister quoted the Prime Minister’s vision of “Zero Defect, Zero Effect,” emphasizing the need for products that are not only defect-free but also sustainable and environmentally friendly. He asserted that India’s future will be shaped by its own standards, which should be globally recognized while also being impactful locally.
The minister’s remarks highlight the government’s proactive approach to quality assurance. By ensuring that products meet high standards, the government aims to build consumer trust and promote economic growth. This commitment to quality is not just about compliance; it is about fostering a culture of excellence that permeates every sector of the economy.
Expansion of Standards and Quality Control Orders
During his address, Shri Joshi provided impressive statistics regarding the expansion of standards in India. He noted that over 23,500 standards have been enforced across various sectors, ranging from bags and machinery to medical goods. Furthermore, he mentioned that 94% of Indian standards have been harmonized with those of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This alignment with international standards is crucial for enhancing the global competitiveness of Indian products.
The minister also highlighted the significant growth in the number of Quality Control Orders. In 2014, there were only 14 QCOs covering 106 products. Today, that number has surged to 186 QCOs covering 760 products. This dramatic increase demonstrates the government’s commitment to ensuring that a wider range of products meets stringent quality standards. Such measures not only protect consumers but also encourage manufacturers to adopt best practices in production.
Hallmarking and Consumer Trust
Shri Joshi also addressed the importance of hallmarking in building consumer trust. He revealed that over 44.28 crore articles of gold, jewelry, and artifacts have been hallmarked to date. This hallmarking process assures consumers of the quality and authenticity of their purchases. The minister acknowledged the growing consumer demand for hallmarking silver and urged the BIS to consider this request.
The Bureau of Indian Standards has established itself as a symbol of trust across multiple sectors, promoting agriculture, manufacturing, and technology. The BIS Quality Marks signify that products have met rigorous quality standards, thereby enhancing consumer confidence. The minister praised the BIS for its legacy and unwavering commitment to quality, trust, and excellence.
Collaborations for Innovation and Sustainable Development
The event also marked the launch of several initiatives aimed at fostering innovation and improving industry practices. Shri Joshi inaugurated a state-of-the-art studio and introduced outreach materials and test method videos. Additionally, the BIS formalized collaborations with prestigious academic institutions, including IIT Tirupati, IIT Bhubaneswar, IIM Nagpur, NIT Warangal, and IIFT Delhi. These Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aim to advance sustainable development goals and drive innovation in various sectors.
The involvement of academic institutions in quality assurance and standardization is a significant step towards bridging the gap between industry and academia. By leveraging innovative technologies and creative solutions, the BIS aims to lead the nation’s progress and fulfill its aspirations. This collaborative approach will not only enhance the quality of products but also contribute to the overall growth of the Indian economy.
