The researchers evaluated five key factors to measure the chimps’ nut-cracking abilities: the time taken to crack a nut, the number of strikes needed, success rates, instances of nut displacement during striking, and occasions when a chimp abandoned one rock for another. These factors provided a comprehensive view of the skills involved in this seemingly straightforward task.

Findings on Skill Variation

The study revealed marked differences in the success rates of the chimpanzees. Some individuals excelled, completing the task quickly and efficiently, while others took twice as long or failed altogether. Interestingly, the analysis indicated that proficiency generally improved with age. However, there was no significant difference in skill levels between male and female chimps.
