Champion Fish Farmers Gather for Insightful Government Meeting
On January 28, 2026, Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, the Union Secretary for the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, hosted a virtual meeting with Champion Fish Farmers from across India. This collaboration aimed to discuss their experiences in implementing modern aquaculture practices. The meeting saw participation from 59 distinguished farmers, including a Padmashri awardee, as well as representatives from the Rajya Sabha, the Department of Fisheries, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB).
Government Initiatives Bolstering Fisheries Sector
The Indian government continues to support the fisheries and aquaculture industry through various strategic schemes. Programs such as the Blue Revolution Scheme, Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF), and Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) are designed to enhance infrastructure, provide financial access, and promote technology adoption in aquaculture.
Champion Farmers Leading the Way
Champion Fish Farmers play a pivotal role in the fisheries sector, acting as Brand Ambassadors for fish farming. By embracing cutting-edge technologies like Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) and Biofloc, these farmers establish sustainable and scalable aquaculture models. Their leadership is critical in mentoring emerging farmers and promoting best practices throughout the industry.
Engaging Discussions with Farmers
During the meeting, Dr. Likhi expressed his approval of the active involvement of all participants. He acknowledged their contributions toward advancing the fisheries sector and emphasized the importance of the farmers’ role in implementing scientific practices. He encouraged them to mentor peers, thus fostering capacity building at grassroots levels. A promise of ongoing support from the government, in collaboration with state administrations and ICAR institutions, was also made.
Insights from Industry Experts
Shri Sagar Mehra, the Joint Secretary for Inland Fisheries, discussed the benefits of government initiatives, highlighting that Champion Fish Farmers should transcend their individual achievements to promote cluster-based growth and technology validation. Meanwhile, Dr. J.K. Jena from ICAR stressed the necessity of adopting modern technologies and effective disease management to enhance productivity and profitability.
Addressing Farmers’ Concerns
Champion Fish Farmers shared valuable insights on several challenges faced in the field. Padma Shri recipient Shri Sultan Singh and others raised critical issues such as seed availability, high feed costs, and the need for efficient energy solutions. They advocated for the adoption of organic feeds derived from animal husbandry waste and underscored the importance of solar energy solutions to reduce costs.
Moreover, farmers from coastal and inland areas highlighted challenges related to seasonal seed shortages and market access, particularly in remote regions. They proposed improvements in storage infrastructure and the integration of aquaculture with other farming practices to enhance efficiency.
