Centre Informs Lok Sabha About Four Ports Under Construction in Andhra Pradesh

The Indian government is intensifying its efforts to enhance port infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh, with four new ports currently under construction. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernize ports across the nation, aimed at improving efficiency and connectivity. The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, provided details in Parliament, highlighting various measures being implemented to facilitate this expansion.

Port Development in Andhra Pradesh

The Centre is actively developing four significant ports in Andhra Pradesh: Mulapeta Port in Srikakulam district, Machilipatnam Port in Krishna district, Ramayapatnam Port in SPSR Nellore district, and Kakinada SEZ Port in Kakinada district. These projects are part of a comprehensive plan to boost port-led infrastructure in the region. The government aims to enhance the operational capabilities of these ports through various modernization initiatives, which include mechanization of berths and terminals, digitalization of processes, and improvements in logistics integration.

Modernization and Efficiency Measures

To improve port efficiency, the government is implementing several key measures. These include the construction of new berths, capital dredging to accommodate larger vessels, and upgrades to connectivity via road, rail, and waterways. Additionally, the government is focusing on reducing vessel turnaround times by introducing advanced technologies. Initiatives such as the elimination of manual forms, direct port delivery, and the use of container scanners are being rolled out. The introduction of RFID-based gate automation and the Maritime Single Window platform, SagarSetu 2.0, are also part of this modernization effort.

National Port Initiatives

The government has recently notified two new major ports: Vadhavan Port in Maharashtra and Galathea Bay Port in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Currently, there are 12 major ports under the central government’s administration, alongside 68 other-than-major ports managed by state governments. Under the Sagarmala scheme, the government provides financial assistance across five key areas: port modernization, connectivity, port-led industrialization, coastal community development, and inland water transport. This initiative aims to enhance the overall efficiency and sustainability of India’s port infrastructure.

Sustainability Efforts and Future Plans

In addition to infrastructure development, the government is prioritizing sustainability in port operations. The HaritSagar green port guidelines have been introduced to foster environmentally friendly practices within port ecosystems. Furthermore, the Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP) aims to transition harbor tugs to greener fuel alternatives. The Cruise Bharat Mission has also been launched to promote cruise tourism across the country, reflecting the government’s commitment to sustainable development in the maritime sector. These initiatives underscore a holistic approach to port development, balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility.
