Central Zoo Authority Meeting Focuses on Conservation and Management
In a significant gathering for wildlife conservation, Shri Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, led the 43rd meeting of the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) at the National Zoological Park in New Delhi on Tuesday. During this meeting, vital discussions revolved around ex-situ conservation and the operational management of zoos throughout India. The Minister shared updates via social media, highlighting the necessity of completing the second round of Management Effectiveness Evaluation (MEE) of zoos nationwide.
Key Decisions and Strategic Directions
Among the notable decisions made during the meeting, a sub-committee was formed to explore the potential for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions to enhance zoo funding. Additionally, the frequency of CZA meetings is set to increase, aligning them more closely with the schedule of the Standing Committee of the National Board for Wildlife. These initiatives underscore a commitment to elevating zoo standards across the country.
Promoting Empathy and Conservation Awareness
During the discussions, Shri Yadav emphasized that the MEE process is crucial for maintaining high standards in zoos. He reiterated that one of the primary goals outlined in the National Policy on Zoos is to foster empathy towards wild animals among visitors and to heighten awareness about conservation efforts and the importance of ecological balance. To support this, it was proposed that zoos enhance their outreach activities, including the development of an annual calendar to mark significant conservation days and assign species-specific responsibilities to individual zoos.
Celebrating 34 Years of the Central Zoo Authority
The meeting coincided with the CZA’s 34th Foundation Day, celebrated with the Chief Wildlife Warden and Zoo Directors’ Conference, which served as a vital platform for dialogue on zoo management and wildlife preservation.
Insights on Modern Zoo Management
In his inaugural address at the conference, Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh, articulated that zoos should serve not merely as exhibition spaces but as pivotal educational resources for researchers and the public alike. He urged zoo officials to adopt best practices from around the globe while also fostering sensitivity towards animals.
Leveraging Technology and Collaboration
Shri Singh also pointed out the necessity of integrating modern technology into zoo management to improve care for animals and enhance visitor experiences. He called for increased collaboration with state governments, research institutions, and NGOs to garner valuable insights that could benefit zoo operations from the public’s perspective.
A Milestone in Conservation Efforts
Highlighting the significance of the CZA’s Foundation Day, Director General of Forests and Special Secretary, Shri Sushil Kumar Awasthi, remarked that this occasion marks a pivotal milestone in India’s mission to strengthen ethical management in zoos. With over 150 zoos across the country, most of which are managed by forest departments, the CZA plays a critical role in evolving these facilities from traditional animal exhibitions into influential conservation institutions.
The Conference, rich with insights from various sectors, addressed contemporary challenges and opportunities relevant to zoo management, animal care, and sustainable practices, reaffirming the interdependence of animal welfare, ecosystem health, and human communities in wildlife conservation efforts.
