Central Observers Briefed Ahead of Tamil Nadu Elections

In preparations for the upcoming elections in Tamil Nadu, Chief Election Commissioner Shri Gyanesh Kumar, joined by Election Commissioners Dr. S.S. Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi, convened a review meeting to equip Central Observers for their crucial roles. With polling slated for April 23, 2026, this briefing aimed to ensure that the electoral process is conducted in a transparent, festive atmosphere, free from intimidation and violence.

The meeting saw the participation of 326 Central Observers and a Special Expenditure Observer, along with the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Tamil Nadu, all attending via videoconferencing. These observers include 136 General Observers, 40 Police Observers, and 150 Expenditure Observers, spread across 234 Assembly Constituencies (ACs).

Commitment to Free and Fair Elections

During the session, officials underscored the importance of conducting elections in a manner that promotes a celebratory spirit while ensuring they remain fair and free from malfeasance. The Election Commission has emphasized strict adherence to the Model Code of Conduct, with a promise to act swiftly on any reported violations.

Public Engagement and Training Oversight

The observers were instructed to proactively communicate their contact numbers and details regarding how the public, political parties, candidates, or their agents can report complaints. Attention will also be given to ensuring that all Presiding Officers receive appropriate training, focusing on timely updates regarding voter turnout and the proper application of indelible ink.

Facilities at Polling Stations

Moreover, observers were directed to verify that all polling stations meet minimum facility standards. This includes providing mobile phone deposit facilities and benches for voters waiting in line, as well as ensuring ample drinking water and shaded areas to accommodate voters in the anticipated heat.

Monitoring and Error Management

Finally, the Election Commission detailed the necessity for effective webcasting monitoring. Arrangements for a control room must be thoroughly checked, and trial runs conducted to ensure all staff are proficient in identifying and addressing any issues that may arise during the polling process.
