Celebrating Linemen: A Day of Recognition and Safety in Power Sector
The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) and Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd. marked the sixth edition of ‘Lineman Diwas’ in New Delhi yesterday, celebrating the unwavering dedication of linemen and maintenance staff. This event highlights the essential role these professionals play in ensuring reliable electricity service across India, especially during challenging times.
Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy, Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, attended the event alongside Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary (Power), and other distinguished figures from the power sector. The gathering drew approximately 250 linemen and supervisors from over 66 state and private power distribution and generation companies, offering a platform for sharing experiences and discussing the operational challenges faced in maintaining an uninterrupted power supply.
Embracing a Culture of Safety
The proceedings began with a safety pledge, where participants committed to vigilant safety practices to protect themselves and the community. Naik emphasized the importance of a strong safety culture, advocating for the use of personal protective equipment and ongoing training as standard practice. He also announced that modern technologies—such as smart grids and AI-enabled systems—could enhance safety and operational efficiency.
Highlighting the theme of this year’s event, ‘Seva, Suraksha, Swabhiman’—meaning service, safety, and dignity—Naik acknowledged linemen as the unsung heroes of the power sector. Their commitment during adverse weather conditions is crucial for restoring electricity when it is needed most, according to Secretary Agarwal. He underscored the need for every field personnel to be equipped with standardized safety kits to mitigate hazards on the job.
Recognizing Efforts for a Stronger Future
Chairperson of the CEA, Shri Ghanshyam Prasad, reflected on the significance of a dependable power sector as a foundation for national development. He noted the growing participation in Lineman Diwas as evidence of increasing recognition for linemen’s vital contributions to society. Prasad stressed that this acknowledgment should go hand-in-hand with stronger protective measures for these workers.
