Celebrating Democracy: Samvidhan Hatya Diwas Marked with Special Events
The Ministry of Culture paid tribute to **Samvidhan Hatya Diwas** with a captivating program at its New Delhi campus, organized by the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT). The event, graced by Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat as the chief guest, commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Emergency declared in 1975. It aimed to enhance public understanding of democratic principles, constitutional values, and the rights of citizens.
A Tribute to Democracy’s Resilience
During his speech, Minister Shekhawat highlighted that democracy is ingrained in India’s essence, stating, “This event embodies our respect for the freedom fighters who contributed to India’s independence.” He marked this occasion as pivotal to reflecting on the strength and endurance of India’s democracy, despite facing numerous challenges over time. The Minister articulated that democracy encompasses more than just elections; it includes freedom of expression, a free press, and the dignity of all individuals.
Exhibitions and Cultural Performances
The program commenced with a walkthrough of the exhibition titled “Long Live Democracy,” focusing on the Emergency’s effects and the crucial need to protect democratic institutions. Additionally, the “Digital District Repository” exhibition, initiated during ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav,’ unveiled various local stories related to India’s freedom struggle, aiming to document these narratives at the district level.
This engaging exhibition, inaugurated on June 24, 2026, attracted over a thousand students from diverse schools and NGOs. The event also featured a short film that illustrated the significance of Samvidhan Hatya Diwas.
Moreover, a powerful cultural presentation called “Musical Tribute to the Spirit of Democracy – From Silence to Voice, From Darkness to Dawn” was performed by CCRT scholars under the guidance of celebrated flautist Pandit Chetan Joshi, celebrating the strength of Indian democracy.
Reflections from a Freedom Fighter
Shri Ram Bahadur Rai, a noted journalist and author who experienced imprisonment during the Emergency, shared his insights on the era’s formidable challenges and the lasting importance of strong democratic institutions in India.
Honoring Heroes of the Past
The program also hosted the Digital District Repository (DDR) Felicitation Ceremony, focusing on efforts to document district-level stories from India’s freedom struggle. Veteran freedom fighters Shri Sheshrao Laxmanrao Khot and Shri Yeddula Suryanarayana Reddy were honored for their invaluable contributions. The event recognized teachers, researchers, and institutions that have played a pivotal role in enriching the Digital District Repository.
Further enhancing the program, artworks created during the Ministry of Culture’s nationwide Seva Parv initiative were displayed. This initiative, themed “Viksit Bharat ke Rang, Kala ke Sang,” aimed to foster cultural pride and creativity through artistic engagement nationwide.
