Capacity Building Workshop on Sustainable Development Goals
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is committed to enhancing the quality of data in India. To further this goal, MoSPI is organizing a two-day capacity-building workshop focused on the Monitoring Frameworks of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the compilation of Environment Accounts, and Gender Statistics. Scheduled for January 23-24, 2025, in Bhopal, this workshop aims to empower participants with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective data utilization. The event is co-organized by the Government of Madhya Pradesh and supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) India.
Objectives of the Workshop
The primary aim of this workshop is to develop capacity in three critical areas: Sustainable Development Goals, environmental data, and gender statistics. By focusing on these aspects, the workshop seeks to facilitate evidence-based decision-making among participants. The event will bring together representatives from line ministries, state and union territory departments, and international agencies. This diverse participation will foster discussions on pressing issues and allow for the sharing of best practices.
The workshop will also feature the release of a significant report titled “Ocean Ecosystem Accounts in India – A Framework,” prepared by an expert group. This report aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the ocean ecosystem and its importance in the context of sustainable development. By addressing these vital topics, the workshop will contribute to the broader goal of improving data quality and accessibility in India.
Day One: Focus on Sustainable Development Goals
The first day of the workshop will concentrate on Sustainable Development Goals. Key sessions will cover core indicators, sub-national frameworks, and the role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in achieving these goals. Esteemed organizations such as NITI Aayog, MoSPI, and UNDP will lead discussions, sharing their insights and experiences.
A special session will highlight Madhya Pradesh’s efforts in implementing SDGs at the state level. This case study will showcase how local governance can effectively integrate SDGs into its framework. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussions, ask questions, and learn from the experiences of others. This collaborative environment will encourage the exchange of ideas and strategies for successful SDG implementation.
Day Two: Environment and Gender Statistics
The second day of the workshop will delve into the critical topics of environment and gender. Sessions will emphasize the importance of environmental accounts and the valuation of ecosystem services. Participants will learn how these elements can inform policy decisions and promote sustainable practices.
Additionally, the role of gender statistics in shaping policies that empower women and promote gender equality will be a focal point. Experts will present global best practices in environmental data collection and gender statistics. They will stress the need for improved data collection methods and the integration of this data into policy-making processes. By highlighting these issues, the workshop aims to inspire participants to advocate for better data practices in their respective fields.
