CAB Seeks to Dismiss Harsha Bhogle and Simon Doull Ahead of IPL 2025

The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) has formally requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to remove commentators Harsha Bhogle and Simon Doull from the commentary panel for Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) home matches. This decision follows their public criticism of the Eden Gardens curator, particularly after Doull suggested KKR should consider relocating if they do not receive spin-friendly pitches. Bhogle echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the team’s right to a home advantage after KKR’s poor start to the season, which included two losses in their first three home games.
Controversial Comments Spark Reaction
The controversy surrounding the commentators escalated when KKR’s management expressed their dissatisfaction with the pitch conditions at Eden Gardens. Both captain Ajinkya Rahane and head coach Chandrakant Pandit voiced their concerns about the lack of support for spin bowlers in recent matches. Following a high-scoring defeat against Lucknow Super Giants, Rahane made it clear during the post-match press conference that the pitch did not cater to the spinners, stating, “There was no help for the spinners.” He added that further comments on the matter could lead to more controversy.
During a panel discussion, Doull criticized the curator’s approach to pitch preparation. He remarked, “If he (the curator) is not taking heed of what the home team wants… they are paying the stadium fees.” His sharp remarks implied that the curator’s role should not involve passing judgment on the gameplay but rather ensuring the pitches align with the team’s preferences.
Bhogle and Doull’s Absence from Commentary
As a result of the escalating situation, Bhogle and Doull were absent from the commentary team during KKR’s match against Gujarat Titans. Sources close to Bhogle indicated that he was not scheduled for any KKR games. A CAB official confirmed, “Bhogle and Doull are no longer part of the IPL commentary team for KKR’s home matches.” However, there remains a possibility that their status could change for crucial matches later in the season, including the Qualifier 2 and the Final scheduled for May 23 and 25.
The CAB has also come to the defense of their curator, Sujan Mukherjee, asserting that he has adhered to BCCI guidelines that prevent franchises from influencing pitch preparation. This defense comes amid criticism from the KKR management, who have reportedly requested pitch conditions that favor their spin bowlers, including Varun Chakravarthy, Sunil Narine, and Moeen Ali.
Kolkata Knight Riders’ Performance and Future Matches
KKR’s performance in the IPL has been a focal point of concern, particularly after their recent match against Lucknow Super Giants, where they posted a commendable 234 runs but fell short, conceding 238 runs. This high-scoring encounter highlighted the team’s struggles, particularly the inadequacy of the pitch for their spin specialists. Rahane’s frustrations reflect a broader sentiment within the team, as they seek to capitalize on their home advantage.
Looking ahead, KKR will need to address these pitch-related issues to enhance their chances of performing well in the upcoming matches. The team hopes for favorable conditions that will allow their spin bowlers to thrive. As the season progresses, the management and players will be keenly observing the pitch preparations at Eden Gardens, hoping for a turnaround that will aid in their quest for a successful IPL 2025 campaign.
