BRICS Nations Gather to Discuss Clean Coal Technologies

The Ministry of Coal recently hosted a significant BRICS Side Event focusing on Clean Coal Technologies, particularly emphasizing coal gasification. This gathering brought together high-ranking officials, industry experts, technology providers, and a BRICS delegation from Russia, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. The event aimed to foster collaboration and share knowledge on advancing clean coal solutions.

During the keynote address, Shri Sanoj Kumar Jha, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Coal, elaborated on the pivotal role of coal gasification in enhancing India’s energy security and bolstering industrial growth. He explained that coal gasification allows for the transformation of coal into syngas, a versatile fuel that can be utilized for producing ammonia, methanol, hydrogen, synthetic fuels, Direct Reduced Iron (DRI), and various other value-added products. This technology is not only significant for reducing dependence on imports but also for optimizing the use of India’s abundant domestic coal resources.

Shri Jha reiterated the Indian government’s ambition to gasify 100 million tonnes of coal by 2030, supported by conducive policies, financial incentives, and assured coal linkages. He emphasized the collaborative efforts required among different ministries to achieve this ambitious target. Additionally, he showcased advancements in several coal gasification projects, underlining the importance of collaboration among BRICS nations in progressing clean coal technologies.

The event featured insightful presentations from various industry leaders. BHEL discussed cutting-edge coal gasification technology, while Jindal Steel Limited (JSL) and Greta Energy highlighted their ongoing coal gasification initiatives and the technology’s relevance to BRICS countries. Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) provided updates on its Kasta Underground Coal Gasification Pilot Project, and the Nominated Authority addressed coal block allocations and policy measures to support Underground Coal Gasification (UCG). Coal India Limited (CIL) also outlined its coal linkage provisions and related projects.

Following the presentations, an interactive panel discussion took place, delving into crucial topics such as technological innovation, project economics, geological challenges, and the financial support necessary for widespread adoption of coal gasification technology. This dialogue provided a crucial platform for knowledge exchange among BRICS countries and various stakeholders.
