Boosting Tuna Fisheries in Andaman and Nicobar Islands
The Department of Fisheries (DoF) under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying (MoFAH&D) has made significant strides in enhancing the tuna fisheries sector in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. On October 29, 2024, the government announced the establishment of a Tuna Cluster in the region as part of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). This initiative aims to unlock the potential of the islands’ rich marine biodiversity and promote sustainable fishing practices.
Investment Opportunities in Fisheries
To attract investment in the fisheries sector, the DoF, in collaboration with the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Administration, hosted an Investorsโ Meet on November 14, 2024, at Swaraj Dweep. The event aimed to showcase the investment opportunities available in fisheries and aquaculture. The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) played a crucial role in this initiative. They have developed an action plan to enhance seafood exports directly from the islands. This plan addresses existing gaps in the value chain and aims to tap into the islands’ untapped potential.
To facilitate trade, MPEDA has established a Desk Office in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This office will serve as a hub for fisheries trade, providing support and resources to local fishers and businesses. Additionally, MPEDA has identified a cluster of boats for onboard tuna handling training. This training will equip local fishers with the necessary skills to handle tuna effectively, ensuring better quality and higher market value for their catch.
Rich Biodiversity and Untapped Potential
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands boast a rich diversity of tuna species, including Yellowfin, Skipjack, and Bigeye tuna. According to the Andaman and Nicobar Administration, the estimated potential yield of oceanic and neritic tuna in the region is around 64,500 metric tonnes. However, current harvest levels fall significantly short of this potential, indicating a vast opportunity for growth in the tuna fisheries sector.
The governmentโs focus on developing this sector is timely. With the right investments and training, local fishers can increase their catch and improve their livelihoods. The untapped potential in tuna fisheries not only promises economic benefits but also supports sustainable fishing practices that can preserve the marine ecosystem.
Government Support and Infrastructure Development
The DoF has approved several proposals from the Andaman and Nicobar Administration under the PMMSY, with a total investment of Rs. 58.91 crore. The central government will contribute Rs. 31.48 crore to strengthen fisheries infrastructure in the region. Key infrastructure projects include the acquisition of seven deep-sea fishing vessels, upgrading ten existing fishing vessels for export competency, and establishing 29 cold storage and ice plants.
These infrastructure developments are crucial for enhancing the efficiency and competitiveness of the fisheries sector. Improved facilities will enable local fishers to store their catch properly, ensuring freshness and quality for export markets. This investment will not only boost the local economy but also create job opportunities in the region.
