Beti Bachao Beti Padhao: Empowering India’s Girl Child
The foundation of a child’s life and a mother’s health is formed at birth, and India has made significant strides in strengthening maternal and early childhood care. Through a combination of essential health services, nutrition support, and institutional delivery systems, the nation is paving the way for better outcomes for mothers and their children.
The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) initiative, launched on January 22, 2015, by the Government of India, serves as a cornerstone in this transformative effort. This flagship program aims to enhance the survival, protection, and empowerment of the girl child, responding to troubling trends like the declining Child Sex Ratio (CSR) and rampant gender discrimination. Jointly executed by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and the Ministry of Education, BBBP has grown from a targeted policy to a vast nationwide movement.
Significant Milestones Achieved
Over the past eleven years, BBBP has mobilized various stakeholders, including government bodies, the media, civil society, and local communities. This collaborative effort emphasizes the importance of dignity at birth and promotes the protection and education of girls, creating a nurturing environment for their overall development.
According to the Health Management Information System data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the national Sex Ratio at Birth has seen an encouraging rise from 918 in 2014-15 to 929 in 2024-25. This improvement highlights ongoing efforts to curb gender-biased sex selection and to promote institutional deliveries across the country.
Progress in Education for Girls
In addition to health improvements, BBBP has made significant contributions to girls’ education. The Unified District Information System for Education reports that girls’ enrolment in secondary schools increased from 75.51% in 2014-15 to 80.2% in 2024-25. This rise indicates better retention and transition rates for girls in the education system.
BBBP continues to focus on a lifecycle approach that encompasses safe births, early childhood care, and the empowerment through education of girls. The program actively seeks to promote behavioral changes by fostering sustained advocacy, engaging communities, and encouraging collaboration among various Ministries and States/Union Territories.
With a firm commitment to further strengthen the BBBP framework, the Ministry of Women and Child Development strives to ensure that every girl child in India receives the protection and education she deserves. By doing so, the initiative contributes significantly to the broader vision of women-led development, paving the way for a brighter future.
