Archer Integrates Lilium’s Electric Aircraft Technology

Electric aircraft startup Lilium, which filed for insolvency a year ago, has not completely faded from the aviation scene. Despite multiple unsuccessful attempts to restructure, the German company’s assets have found a new home. Archer Aviation has acquired Lilium’s patent assets for €18 million ($21 million), marking a significant development in the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) sector. This acquisition comes after Lilium’s ambitious journey, which included raising over $1 billion and going public in 2021, but ultimately ended in financial difficulties.

Failed Restructuring Attempts

Lilium’s journey has been tumultuous since its inception in 2015. The company aimed to revolutionize air travel with its vertical take-off and landing aircraft, capable of reaching speeds up to 100 km/h. However, despite securing substantial investments and high-profile customers, including an order for 100 electric jets from Saudi Arabia, Lilium struggled to maintain its financial footing. The company made several attempts to restructure its operations, including a last-minute effort by Mobile Uplift Corporation, which sought to acquire the operating assets of Lilium’s subsidiaries. Unfortunately, these efforts did not succeed, leading to a bankruptcy administrator overseeing the sale of the company’s assets through a competitive bidding process.

Archer Aviation’s Winning Bid

In a competitive bidding environment, Archer Aviation emerged victorious, outbidding rivals such as Ambitious Air Mobility Group and Joby Aviation. Archer’s successful bid for Lilium’s patent assets signifies a strategic move to enhance its technological capabilities in the eVTOL market. The patents acquired include vital technologies related to high-voltage systems, flight controls, ducted fans, and advanced aircraft design. An Archer spokesperson emphasized that these patents would significantly bolster the company’s intellectual property portfolio, which now exceeds 1,000 global patent assets. This acquisition not only reflects Archer’s commitment to innovation but also positions the company to expand its offerings in the electric aviation sector.

Future Applications of Lilium’s Technology

While Archer has not disclosed specific plans for the newly acquired patents, there are indications that Lilium’s electric ducted fans could be utilized in light-sport or regional electric flight applications. This potential expansion goes beyond Archer’s original focus on developing an air taxi network. Since going public in 2021 through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company, Archer has diversified its initiatives, including a defense program launched in December. This program features a collaboration with weapons manufacturer Anduril to create a hybrid gas-and-electric-powered VTOL aircraft for defense purposes. The integration of Lilium’s technology could enhance Archer’s capabilities in both commercial and defense aviation sectors.

The Legacy of Lilium

Lilium’s story serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by startups in the rapidly evolving aviation industry. Despite its eventual insolvency, the company’s innovative spirit and technological advancements have not been entirely lost. The acquisition of its patents by Archer Aviation highlights the ongoing interest and investment in eVTOL technology. As the aviation landscape continues to shift towards electric solutions, the legacy of Lilium may live on through Archer’s endeavors, potentially paving the way for new advancements in urban air mobility and beyond.
