After Six Decades of Mystery, Wisconsin Woman Surfaces “Alive and Kicking!”
In a remarkable twist of fate, a Wisconsin woman who went missing over 60 years ago has been found alive and well. Audrey Backeberg, who was just 20 years old when she disappeared in 1962, was located thanks to modern DNA technology. Detective Isaac Hanson reopened her cold case, leading to this astonishing discovery.
The Disappearance
Audrey Backeberg vanished from her Reedsburg home in July 1962. At the time, she left with a babysitter, hitchhiking to Madison, Wisconsin, before taking a Greyhound bus to Indianapolis, Indiana. The babysitter last saw her walking away from the bus stop, and despite numerous investigations over the years, no leads emerged until recently.
The Breakthrough
This year, Detective Hanson and his team revisited the cold case using new DNA technology, including self-submit websites like Ancestry.com. They discovered that Ms. Backeberg’s sister had an account linked to an address associated with her. “I called the local sheriff’s department, said ‘Hey, there’s this lady living at this address. Do you guys have somebody, you can just go pop in?'” Hanson recounted. Just ten minutes later, he received a call from Ms. Backeberg, and they spoke for 45 minutes.
A Private Decision
When asked about the reasons behind her departure, Detective Hanson chose to keep the details private. He mentioned that Ms. Backeberg seemed happy and confident in her decision to leave. “She had her reasons for leaving,” he stated, emphasizing her contentment with her life choices.
According to the Wisconsin Missing Persons Advocacy organization, Ms. Backeberg’s marriage was troubled, with allegations of abuse surfacing just days before her disappearance. The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that she left on her own accord and is currently living outside Wisconsin.
Acknowledging the Efforts
The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude for the dedication of both past and present investigators in resolving this cold case. They highlighted the importance of continued efforts in providing answers to families and communities. As for Ms. Backeberg, it remains uncertain whether she plans to reconnect with her family after all these years.
