Taoiseach is the Irish word for “chief” or “leader” and was adopted as the title of the “head of government or prime minister” in the 1937 Irish Constitution. In English and Irish, it is the official title of the president but is not used for the prime ministers of other countries, who are referred to by the generic termย prรญomh-aire. The phraseย Taoiseach is sometimes used in an otherwise English language context and means the same as “the Taoiseach”.
