The Indian government is taking significant steps to enhance the country’s sports governance as it prepares for the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. In a recent roundtable meeting held in New Delhi, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, urged National Sports Federations (NSFs) to adopt good governance practices. The meeting focused on creating a robust sports ecosystem that emphasizes planning, governance, and infrastructure. The aim is to ensure that athletes receive the support they need to excel on the international stage.
Emphasizing Transparency and Accountability
During the meeting, Dr. Mandaviya stressed the importance of transparency and accountability within NSFs. He highlighted that many federations face challenges due to legal disputes, which can hinder athletes’ progress. “We need to minimize litigations so that athletes don’t have to suffer,” he stated. The minister pointed out that a 360-degree approach is essential for comprehensive sports development.
He also addressed the issue of election transparency within federations. Dr. Mandaviya noted that some individuals cling to their positions, leading to conflicts and complications for athletes. “Our government is very clear that all the federations have to adopt good governance in their functioning,” he emphasized. This call for reform aims to create a fair and supportive environment for athletes, allowing them to focus on their training and performance.
A Unified Effort for Olympic Success
Looking ahead to the 2028 Olympics, Dr. Mandaviya called for a collective effort from all stakeholders in the sports community. He stated, “If we want to host the 2036 Olympics and improve our medal tally in LA 2028, all stakeholders will have to pool in their resources and efforts.” This statement underscores the need for collaboration among government bodies, NSFs, and the private sector to enhance India’s sports infrastructure and athlete support systems.

Programs like Khelo India play a vital role in this initiative, providing young athletes with opportunities to excel.
The minister pointed out that India’s diverse geography supports various sports. With a coastline of over 7,000 kilometers, there is significant potential for developing swimming talent. Additionally, tribal areas often produce natural athletes in sports like archery. “We have to create a robust system to nurture these talents,” he said, highlighting the need for targeted development programs.
To further enhance talent development, Dr. Mandaviya encouraged corporate involvement through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. He urged NSFs to prioritize establishing an academy culture focused on coaching and talent development, with support from the private sector. This collaboration can lead to a more sustainable and effective sports ecosystem in India.
Enhancing Coaching Quality and Government Engagement
Improving the quality of coaching in India is another critical focus area for the government. Dr. Mandaviya discussed plans to provide Indian coaches with international exposure, which can enhance their skills and knowledge. This initiative aims to elevate the standard of coaching across various sports disciplines.
Additionally, the minister is working on optimizing the engagement of government officials recruited under the sports quota in different Central Government Departments and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). Ensuring their active contribution to sports-related activities can create a more supportive environment for athletes and coaches alike.
