PM congratulates weightlifter Bindyarani Devi on winning Silver Medal at CWG 2022

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has congratulated weightlifter, Bindyarani Devi on winning Silver Medal at Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.

In a tweet, the Prime Minister said;

“Congratulations to Bindyarani Devi for winning a Silver medal at CWG, Birmingham. This accomplishment is a manifestation of her tenacity and it has made every Indian very happy. I wish her the very best for her future endeavours.”

The 23-year-old Bindyarani Devi, the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships gold medallist from 2019, lifted a total of 202kg (snatch – 86kg; clean and jerk – 116 kg) to earn her podium finish at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Solihull. The lift also saw Bindyarani Devi better her own national record (198kg previously) for a total lift in women’s 55kg weightlifting.

Adijat Olarinoye, the 2021 world championships silver medallist from Nigeria, expectedly won the gold medal with a total lift of 203kg (92kg+111kg), a new Commonwealth Games record. English national champion Fraer Morrow, meanwhile, delighted the home crowd by logging 198kg (89kg+109kg) to claim the bronze.

The CWG 2022 is scheduled to be held in Birmingham from 28th July till 08th August 2022. A total of 215 athletes, participating in 141 events across 19 sporting disciplines, will represent India in the CWG 2022.
