Empowering Young Innovators for Disability Inclusion

The Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Citi Foundation, has launched the seventh edition of the Youth Co:Lab National Innovation Challenge for 2024-2025. This initiative aims to empower young entrepreneurs, particularly those with disabilities, to create innovative solutions that enhance access to opportunities and well-being for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs). The challenge is designed to foster social entrepreneurship and drive sustainable development, with the AssisTech Foundation (ATF) playing a key role in its implementation.

A Call for Innovative Solutions

The Youth Co:Lab National Innovation Challenge invites young entrepreneurs to submit their applications. This year, the focus is on developing solutions that improve the lives of Persons with Disabilities. The challenge encourages participation from all young innovators, including those with disabilities, to ensure a diverse range of ideas and perspectives. The initiative aims to create a platform where young minds can collaborate and innovate, ultimately leading to impactful solutions that address real-world challenges faced by PwDs.

The challenge will explore various sub-categories, including Inclusive and Accessible Assistive Technology (AT), Inclusive Educational Technology, and Accessible Care Models. By targeting these areas, the initiative seeks to promote inclusivity and accessibility in technology and education. The goal is to empower young entrepreneurs to develop products and services that can significantly improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.

Collaboration with AssisTech Foundation

This year’s challenge is implemented in collaboration with the AssisTech Foundation (ATF), a leading organization in India focused on accelerating Assistive Technology innovation for People with Disabilities. ATF’s expertise in disability inclusion and technology innovation is crucial for the success of this initiative. The foundation aims to leverage cutting-edge technologies, such as artificial intelligence and augmented reality, to create solutions that enhance independence and learning for individuals with disabilities.

Prateek Madhav, CEO and Co-Founder of ATF, emphasized the potential of technology in transforming lives. He highlighted examples like AI enabling visually impaired individuals to navigate independently and AR/VR enhancing learning experiences for people with autism. The partnership between ATF, UNDP, and AIM aims to create a robust ecosystem that supports young innovators in their quest to develop impactful solutions.

The Impact of Youth Co:Lab

Youth Co:Lab was co-created in 2017 by UNDP and Citi Foundation to empower youth and accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through social innovation and entrepreneurship. Since its launch in India in 2019, the initiative has conducted six national theme-specific dialogues, reaching over 19,000 individuals and supporting the formation of 2,600 youth-led social innovation teams.

Dr. Angela Lusigi, UNDP Resident Representative in India, expressed her belief in the potential of young people as changemakers. She noted that this year’s challenge prioritizes startups led by and for persons with disabilities, marking a significant step toward promoting disability-inclusive development. The initiative not only aims to support young entrepreneurs but also seeks to create a more inclusive society where everyone has access to opportunities.

Supporting Early-Stage Startups

The 2025 program aims to support 30-35 early-stage startups through a springboard program. This initiative will provide seed grants to the best-performing startups, enabling them to scale their initiatives effectively. Young founders aged 18-32, who are passionate about addressing real-world challenges and fostering disability inclusion, are encouraged to apply.

The launch ceremony, held virtually, included senior leaders from AIM, UNDP India, ATF, and Citi, along with over 100 stakeholders from the ecosystem. The event featured a formal partnership announcement and a live-streamed launch video, showcasing the commitment of all partners to empower young innovators.
