Jitendra Singh calls for speedy completion of hydel power projects
In a recent meeting held in Kishtwar, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized the urgent need to accelerate ongoing hydel power projects. He stated that once completed, these projects could generate up to 8000 MW of electricity, positioning Jammu and Kashmir as a significant power hub in North India. The meeting, part of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA), brought together local officials, representatives from Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), and other stakeholders to discuss various development initiatives. Dr. Singh’s remarks highlighted the importance of infrastructure development, local employment, and environmental considerations in the region.
Accelerating Hydel Power Projects
Dr. Jitendra Singh called for a swift completion of hydel power projects in Kishtwar. He noted that the potential electricity generation of 8000 MW could transform the region’s energy landscape. This shift would not only meet local demand but also allow for energy exports to neighboring states. The Union Minister urged the National Hydro Power Corporation Limited (NHPC) to enhance the skills of local unskilled labor. By providing specialized training, the NHPC can increase local employment opportunities and ensure that residents benefit from the projects in their own communities.

Additionally, the Union Minister reviewed projects under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and the Jal Jeevan Mission. He urged the Roads and Buildings (R&B) department to collaborate closely with public representatives to ensure timely execution of these projects. Dr. Singh highlighted the importance of bridging communication gaps between the district administration and PRIs. He recommended establishing a Standard Operating Procedure for sharing information during field visits, ensuring that local representatives’ inputs are considered in project planning and execution.
Addressing Employment and Public Service Concerns
Dr. Singh expressed concern over the trend of public servants, including doctors and teachers, leaving their positions without following proper procedures. He proposed the establishment of a uniform policy requiring these individuals to provide compensation to the government for any inconvenience caused to citizens. This policy aims to prevent staffing shortages in critical sectors and ensure that public services remain uninterrupted.
In addition to addressing employment issues, Dr. Singh called for mass awareness campaigns to promote various government schemes, including the Ayushman Bharat scheme and the PM Surya Ghar Mutt Bijli Yojana. He also encouraged the promotion of local sports through initiatives like the Sansad Khelkud Spardha. Furthermore, he highlighted the potential for economic growth through the branding of local products, such as saffron and cumin seeds. A saffron park is set to be inaugurated soon, which will further boost the local economy.
