CCRAS Celebrates 56th Foundation Day with Symposium
The Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) marked its 56th Foundation Day on December 1, 2024, with a significant symposium titled โResearch and Innovation in Ayurveda.โ The event took place at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi and brought together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders from various fields. The symposium aimed to highlight the advancements in Ayurvedic research and set a future direction for innovation in this ancient system of medicine.
Acknowledging Achievements and Future Directions
During the symposium, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, praised the efforts of Prof. Acharya, the Director General of CCRAS, and Dr. N. Srikanth, Deputy Director General, for their remarkable contributions to Ayurveda. Kotecha emphasized the importance of the symposium in shaping future research and innovation. He reflected on the task force’s efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, which focused on public welfare. Kotecha also announced ambitious plans for the future, stating that by 2030, three globally accepted botanical drugs would be standardized, and comprehensive dossiers would be prepared. He highlighted Mission Utkarsh, a large-scale public health initiative that has successfully benefited over 500,000 adolescent girls suffering from anemia. This initiative exemplifies a participatory approach to health, drawing on the rich traditions of Indian Knowledge Systems.
Prof. (Vaidya) Rabinarayan Acharya, in his welcome address, outlined CCRAS’s key achievements and ongoing activities. He discussed collaborations with prestigious institutions such as CSIR, DRDO, and AIIMS, which have been instrumental in advancing fundamental research. Acharya emphasized the importance of fostering a research-oriented mindset among stakeholders, including teachers and students. The event featured a short film titled โGenesis and Achievements of CCRAS,โ showcasing the council’s journey and milestones over the years.
The Growing Popularity of Ayurveda
Prof. Shrinivasa Varakhedi, Vice Chancellor of the Central Sanskrit University, spoke about the increasing global interest in Ayurveda. He noted that in recent years, awareness of Ayurveda and Yoga has surged. Varakhedi stressed the need to reconnect with traditional practices to facilitate meaningful research that benefits public health. He introduced the concept of personalized medicine, which is deeply rooted in Ayurvedic principles. According to Varakhedi, ancient texts are descriptive rather than prescriptive, promoting an active participatory approach to health rather than a passive one.
Prof. Bhushan Patwardhan, National Research Professor-Ayush, also addressed the audience, commending CCRAS for its pivotal role in advancing Ayurvedic research. He acknowledged the efforts of the CCRAS team in building a legacy of excellence. Patwardhan emphasized the importance of remaining connected to ancient traditions, arguing that modern science often limits itself to what can be perceived through the senses. In contrast, Indian Knowledge Systems offer a holistic view of health that transcends these limitations.
Recognizing Contributions and Advancements
The event also served as a platform to recognize individuals and organizations that have significantly contributed to the field of Ayurveda. Lifetime achievement awards were presented to Dr. M.P.S. Arya and Dr. Maya Ram Uniyal for their exemplary work in Ayurveda. Other honorees included Dr. Neel Sarovar Bhavesh and Dr. Galib for their contributions as reviewers of scientific communications. Padma Shri Prof. D.T. Shahani was recognized for his collaborative project with IIT, while Dr. Arun Gupta and Dr. Sumit Srivastava were acknowledged for their efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Additionally, the symposium featured three technical sessions focused on critical themes in Ayurvedic advancement. Notable lectures included โInnovation and Indian Knowledge Systems: Ayurveda Perspectiveโ by Dr. Bhushan Patwardhan and โTransdisciplinary Research: Way Forwardโ by Dr. K. Satyamoorthy. A dynamic panel discussion followed, exploring the growing opportunities for start-ups in the Ayurvedic sector. Industry leaders shared insights on the future of Ayurveda in the global market.
A Collaborative Future for Ayurveda
The symposium attracted over 400 participants, including scientists, policymakers, academicians, researchers, and industry stakeholders. This gathering underscored the collaborative spirit and commitment to innovation that CCRAS embodies. The event reaffirmed the council’s mission to ensure that Ayurveda remains a cornerstone of holistic and sustainable healthcare systems worldwide.
Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha graced the event as the Chief Guest, while Prof. Shrinivasa Varakhedi and Prof. Bhushan Patwardhan served as special guests. Other dignitaries from the Ministry of Ayush and various research institutions were also present, contributing to the rich discussions and exchanges that took place during the symposium. The 56th Foundation Day of CCRAS not only celebrated past achievements but also set a promising agenda for the future of Ayurveda.
