Highlights from the 18th NCB International Conference
The 18th NCB International Conference & Exhibition on Cement, Concrete, and Building Materials took place from November 27 to 29, 2024, at the Yashobhoomi Convention Centre in Dwarka, New Delhi. This significant event brought together industry leaders, researchers, and students to discuss advancements in the cement and building materials sector. The conference concluded successfully, showcasing the latest innovations and recognizing excellence in the industry.
Awards for Excellence in the Cement Industry
During the conference, Ms. Arti Bhatnagar, Additional Secretary and Financial Advisor of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), presented National Awards to outstanding cement plants. These awards recognized achievements in energy excellence, environmental performance, total quality management, and the circular economy. Ms. Bhatnagar praised the Indian cement industry for its commitment to being water positive and plastic negative. This recognition highlights the industry’s efforts to adopt sustainable practices and reduce its environmental impact.
The awards are a continuation of a tradition that began at the first NCB International Seminar in 1987. The Ministry of Industry initiated the National Award for Energy Efficiency scheme in 1986-87. This long-standing initiative underscores the importance of energy efficiency in the cement sector and encourages companies to strive for excellence.
Launch of Indian Certified Reference Material
A significant highlight of the conference was the launch of the Bharatiya Nirdeshak Dravya (BND), an Indian Certified Reference Material for Gypsum Standard. This initiative, developed by NCB in collaboration with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and the National Metrology Institute (NMI) of India, aims to support the “Make in India” and “Atma Nirbhar Bharat” initiatives. The BND will help reduce reliance on imported materials, ultimately saving foreign exchange.
Additionally, the 8th edition of the NCB Guide norms on cement plant operations was released. This guide provides essential standards and practices for the industry, ensuring that cement plants operate efficiently and sustainably. The launch of these materials reflects NCB’s commitment to fostering innovation and self-reliance in the Indian cement sector.
Engaging Participation and Technical Presentations
The conference witnessed remarkable participation, with over 1,160 delegates, more than 600 visitors, and around 140 students attending. This diverse group included industry professionals, researchers, and students eager to learn and share knowledge. A total of 150 technical papers were presented across 21 sessions, showcasing the latest research and developments in the field. Additionally, 70 posters were digitally displayed, allowing for further engagement and discussion.
Shri Mahendra Singhi, a member of the Board of Governors and Strategic Advisor at Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Ltd., presented certificates for papers of Special Merit during the event. This recognition encourages researchers to continue contributing valuable insights to the industry. Furthermore, the conference organizers, NCB, announced plans to quantify the carbon footprint of the event with the help of the startup “Zero Carbon.” This initiative aims to offset CO2 emissions, reinforcing the commitment to sustainability within the industry.
