India’s Gaming Industry Takes a Giant Leap

In a groundbreaking move to elevate India’s standing in the global gaming landscape, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with WinZO, the country’s largest social gaming and interactive entertainment platform. This collaboration aims to create a thriving ecosystem for over 2,000 startups, innovators, and students. By providing mentorship, industry insights, and access to global opportunities, this initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat, or self-reliant India, in the gaming and technology sectors. As the global gaming market is projected to reach $300 billion, this partnership seeks to position India as a key player in interactive entertainment.

Bridging the Talent Gap in Gaming

The MoU focuses on addressing the talent gap in India’s interactive entertainment sector. Joint Secretary of DPIIT, Shri Sanjiv Singh, emphasized the importance of equipping professionals with essential skills. These skills include coding, animation, game design, and development. According to a recent report by the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), India’s interactive entertainment sector is expected to grow to $60 billion by 2034. This growth could create over 2 million jobs.

To harness this potential, the DPIIT-WinZO partnership will nurture startups through various initiatives. These include hackathons, workshops, accelerator programs, and curated pitch events. The MoU spans two years and aims to accelerate the growth of India’s interactive entertainment sector. By fostering innovation and creating a skilled workforce, this initiative will help startups compete on a global stage.

Establishing a Center of Excellence

A key component of this collaboration is the establishment of a Center of Excellence (CoE) by WinZO, in partnership with DPIIT. The CoE will serve as a launchpad for startups and entrepreneurs. It will focus on critical areas such as developing a skilled workforce, innovating monetization strategies for Indian gaming assets, and creating ‘Made in India’ intellectual property for global markets.

The CoE aims to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) and drive the manufacturing of interactive technology products in India. By addressing long-standing challenges like monetization and talent shortages, the CoE will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of India’s gaming and interactive entertainment industry. This initiative is expected to create a robust framework for nurturing talent and innovation, ultimately leading to a more competitive gaming sector.

Expanding WinZO’s Tech Triumph Program

In addition to the CoE, the MoU will enhance WinZO’s flagship Tech Triumph Program (Bharat Edition). This program is designed to identify and mentor India’s top game developers. It has already showcased Indian gaming talent at prestigious global forums, including the Game Developers Conference (GDC) and Gamescom LATAM. With DPIIT’s support, the program will now scale its impact, providing even more opportunities for Indian developers.

Shri Sanjiv Singh noted that this partnership marks a significant milestone in harnessing India’s potential as a producer and exporter in the gaming sector. The collaboration with WinZO aims to foster innovation, promote entrepreneurship, and empower startups to manufacture products that meet global standards. This initiative aligns with the broader vision of making India a leader in interactive technology, contributing meaningfully to Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a self-reliant India.
