India Hosts Historic Global Cooperative Conference
On November 25, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the ICA Global Cooperative Conference 2024 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. This significant event marks the first time in 130 years that the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) has held its General Assembly in India. The conference will also launch the UN International Year of Cooperatives 2025, emphasizing the vital role of cooperatives in global development.
A Landmark Event for Cooperatives
The ICA Global Cooperative Conference is a milestone for the cooperative movement in India. Organized by the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) in collaboration with the ICA and the Government of India, this conference will take place from November 25 to 30. It aims to bring together leaders and stakeholders from the cooperative sector worldwide. The theme, “Cooperatives Build Prosperity for All,” resonates with the Indian government’s vision of “Sahkar Se Samriddhi,” which translates to “Prosperity through Cooperation.”
This conference will feature a variety of discussions, panel sessions, and workshops. These sessions will address the challenges and opportunities that cooperatives face in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Topics will include poverty alleviation, gender equality, and sustainable economic growth. The event aims to foster collaboration and innovation among cooperatives, highlighting their potential to drive social and economic progress.
Launching the UN International Year of Cooperatives 2025
During the conference, Prime Minister Modi will also launch the UN International Year of Cooperatives 2025. This initiative will focus on the theme “Cooperatives Build a Better World.” It aims to showcase the transformative power of cooperatives in promoting social inclusion, economic empowerment, and sustainable development. The United Nations recognizes cooperatives as essential drivers of sustainable development, particularly in reducing inequality and alleviating poverty.
The year 2025 will serve as a global platform to highlight the impact of cooperative enterprises in addressing pressing challenges. By promoting cooperative models, the initiative seeks to inspire communities and nations to work together for a better future. The emphasis on cooperatives aligns with global efforts to achieve the SDGs, making this launch a pivotal moment for the cooperative movement.
Commemorative Stamp and Global Participation
In addition to the conference and the UN initiative, Prime Minister Modi will unveil a commemorative postal stamp. This stamp symbolizes India’s commitment to the cooperative movement. The design features a lotus, representing peace, strength, resilience, and growth. The five petals of the lotus signify the five elements of nature, reflecting the cooperative values of sustainability and community development.
The stamp’s design also incorporates various sectors, including agriculture, dairy, fisheries, consumer cooperatives, and housing. A drone symbolizes the role of modern technology in agriculture, showcasing how innovation can enhance cooperative efforts. The unveiling of this stamp will further solidify India’s dedication to promoting cooperative values.
The conference will also see the participation of notable international figures, including the Honโble Prime Minister of Bhutan, Dasho Tshering Tobgay, and the Honโble Deputy Prime Minister of Fiji, Manoa Kamikamica. Approximately 3,000 delegates from over 100 countries will gather, making this event a truly global affair. The diverse participation underscores the importance of cooperatives in fostering international collaboration and understanding.
