Government Recommends Over ₹1,100 Crore in Asset Monetisation
The Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG), led by the Secretary of the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) and co-led by the Secretary of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), has put forth significant asset monetisation recommendations. The proposals, which encompass assets exceeding ₹1,100 crore, are aimed at enhancing productivity through the monetisation of surplus land and buildings owned by Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs).
These recommendations signify a key step in the Government of India’s ongoing strategy to unlock the value of underutilised public assets. By facilitating their productive use, the government aims to enhance economic growth and efficiency. The asset monetisation programme specifically targets CPSEs and other government entities, encouraging them to harness the economic potential of surplus properties through effective evaluations, expert transaction planning, and competitive pricing.
Path to Approval and Implementation
The proposed monetisation strategies will be submitted to the Cabinet-delegated Alternative Mechanism for evaluation and approval. Upon receiving the necessary endorsements, the government plans to advance with subsequent monetisation efforts in alignment with set protocols.
Role of National Land Monetization Corporation (NLMC)
The National Land Monetization Corporation (NLMC) serves as the government’s dedicated entity for the monetisation of surplus land and non-core assets. Operating under the Department of Public Enterprises and the Ministry of Finance, NLMC plays a critical role in conducting asset assessments, ensuring due diligence, providing valuations, and managing market engagement during the monetisation process. The corporation collaborates closely with various ministries, departments, and asset owners to streamline these operations.
Government’s Commitment
This initiative not only emphasizes the government’s dedication to effective public asset management but also underscores a commitment to transparency and maximization of asset values. By focusing on optimal monetisation techniques, the government aims to facilitate more robust investments which can stimulate further economic development.
