Himachal Pradesh’s Pomegranates Find New Market in Dubai

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), part of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has successfully facilitated the export of 1.3 metric tonnes of Sinduri variety pomegranates from Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh, to Dubai, UAE. This significant shipment, consisting of 650 boxes each weighing 2 kg, marks a vital step in connecting local farmers with international markets.

Amama Exports, based in Uttar Pradesh, managed the export, bridging the gap between local growers and a Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO). This collaborative effort not only opens doors for Himachal Pradesh’s horticultural products but also fosters a sustainable network between farmers, producer organizations, and exporters. The pomegranates were sourced from local farmers and the Bhuntar FPO, which supports around 600 farmers. The horticulture administration in Kullu provided essential support in coordinating procurement.

Sinduri Pomegranates: A Taste of Himachal Pradesh

The Sinduri variety is one of several pomegranate types cultivated in Himachal Pradesh, alongside Bhagwa and Kandhari. Renowned for their vibrant red skin and juicy arils, these pomegranates offer a perfect balance of sweet and tart flavors, making them ideal for fresh consumption and attractive to export markets.

Boosting Farmer’s Income and Export Opportunities

This export initiative showcases the power of direct procurement and the collective efforts of FPOs to strengthen the market linkages for farmers. Participating farmers were able to realize prices that were 50% higher than what is typically available in the domestic market. Such export-focused linkages not only present additional marketing opportunities for growers but also promote quality-driven production and enhance the involvement of FPOs in agricultural exports.

In the fiscal year 2025-26, India exported APEDA-scheduled agricultural products amounting to around USD 2.59 billion, totaling approximately 3.81 million metric tonnes to the UAE. The UAE market holds significant potential for Himachal Pradesh’s horticultural products, contingent on meeting buyer demands and adhering to stringent import standards.

Flagging Off a New Era for Himachal’s Agriculture

The export consignment was officially flagged off by APEDA Chairman, Shri Abhishek Dev, at a ceremony attended by agricultural stakeholders, including APEDA officials, Horticulture Department representatives, exporters, FPO members, and local farmers. This event emphasized the crucial role of coordination among all parties involved in creating export opportunities for regional produce.

The successful export of pomegranates to Dubai signifies an important effort to diversify Himachal Pradesh’s agricultural exports, traditionally centered around apples. There is ample potential for the state to tap into international markets for a variety of products, such as persimmons, stone fruits, juices, and ready-to-eat options. A sustained focus on quality management, efficient market linkages, and compliance with export regulations can significantly enhance prospects for local farmers and further integrate the state into global agricultural trade.

Through these export initiatives, APEDA continues to play a vital role in supporting Indian farmers, exporters, and FPOs, facilitating their access to international markets and strengthening the global footprint of India’s agricultural and processed food products.
