ETM 2026 Kicks Off in Goa, Aiming for Energy Innovation

The 29th Energy Technology Meet (ETM 2026) was launched today at the ONGC Advanced Training Institute in Goa by Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Shri Hardeep Singh Puri. This three-day event is set to unite policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, technology proponents, and energy specialists to explore the latest innovations that will shape India’s energy landscape.
Organized by the Centre for High Technology (CHT) under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and co-hosted by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), this edition of ETM marks the largest gathering yet, featuring over 2,500 delegates, more than 250 speakers, 44 technical sessions, and over 220 exhibition stalls. The theme of the meet, “Accelerating Energy Innovation: From Research to Commercialisation,” emphasizes collaboration across the energy value chain to expedite the development and adoption of emerging technologies.
Strategizing for Energy Resilience
During a fireside chat, Minister Puri shared insights on how India adeptly navigated global energy supply disruptions while minimizing impacts on consumers. He detailed measures taken to boost domestic LPG production and the importance of coordinating across oil and gas public sector undertakings, refineries, and distribution networks to ensure an uninterrupted supply of essential fuels.
The dialogue also aimed at enhancing India’s long-term energy resilience by diversifying supply sources, ramping up domestic production, and embracing a variety of fuels. The Minister spotlighted the potential of compressed biogas (CBG) in converting agricultural and organic waste into energy, providing benefits for farmers and rural communities. Opportunities in sustainable aviation fuel and next-generation biofuels were discussed, alongside the necessity to bolster domestic research and support startups to transition innovative ideas into commercial applications.
A New Vision for R&D in Oil and Gas
A significant announcement during ETM 2026 was the development of a National Oil and Gas R&D Vision, which will be supported by the establishment of the National Hydrocarbon Technology Hub (NHTH). This integrated platform is designed to enhance research and development across the oil and gas sector, consolidating efforts from central public sector enterprises, private R&D firms, startups, and academic institutions.
The NHTH will replace the existing CHT and encompass a broader mission, aiming to foster cooperation and streamline efforts to accelerate the advancement of innovative technologies for global competitiveness.
Innovative Solutions on Display
In addition to important discussions, the Minister toured the exhibition area, showcasing a variety of technologies, products, and solutions from the downstream hydrocarbon sector. This exhibition provided a vital opportunity for stakeholders to demonstrate technological innovations and exchange knowledge on current industry challenges.
The inaugural program also drew attention to government initiatives such as GOBARdhan, with a budget of ₹23,731 crore allocated for increasing compressed biogas production. Complementing this, the Samudra Manthan initiative, aimed at enhancing oil and gas exploration in deepwater areas, has an allocation of ₹84,084 crore. Both schemes are key components in bolstering India’s energy security.
Ongoing Discussions and Future Directions
Throughout ETM 2026, which runs until October 29, the agenda includes numerous technical presentations, panel discussions, poster sessions, and an exhibition focusing on green hydrogen, sustainable aviation fuel, carbon capture, and more. Participants from both domestic and international sectors are sharing research and identifying opportunities to convert technological advancements into commercially viable solutions.
The event also features the MC² Ignite sessions to promote a startup ecosystem in India, alongside the Start-Up Awards and the Refinery Performance & Innovation Awards to recognize achievements in energy sector innovation. Additionally, an R&D Conclave led by the Federation of Indian Petroleum Industry (FIPI) will focus on essential themes such as Net Zero refineries and energy efficiency, fostering collaboration across India’s energy landscape.
