India Hosts Inaugural AI × Food Tech Hackathon at NIFTEM-K

The National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management, Kundli (NIFTEM-K), recently launched India’s first AI × Food Tech Hackathon, named ‘Hack the Fork.’ This innovative event took place over 24 hours, starting on October 24 and concluding on October 25, as teams showcased their groundbreaking solutions to experts.

Bringing Together Innovators

Organized in collaboration with the France-based non-profit Hack the Fork, the hackathon assembled a diverse group of young innovators, researchers, and technology enthusiasts. The goal was to explore the use of Artificial Intelligence in creating sustainable food systems, particularly in the alternative protein sector. From an original pool of more than 85 applicant teams, 25 were chosen to compete in the final round. Ultimately, 22 teams hailing from various states across India participated, with over 90 participants representing prestigious institutions such as IITs, IIITs, and the University of Delhi.

Encouraging Innovation in Food Technology

Dr. Harinder Singh Oberoi, Director of NIFTEM-K, emphasized the importance of the hackathon in fostering innovative ideas that can enhance India’s food ecosystem. He expressed his hope that this initiative would inspire creative thinking and collaboration among participants, leading to technology-driven solutions for the challenges facing the food industry. Dr. Oberoi congratulated all teams for their creativity and commitment to innovation, encouraging them to seize this opportunity to explore new avenues.

A Supportive Mentorship Environment

The event was managed by Dr. Vimal Pant, a Professor at NIFTEM-K, alongside a panel of esteemed mentors. This panel included Mr. Chaitanya Chilukuri from the Good Food Institute (GFI) India, regional mentor Ms. Svarnim Samant, Dr. Saurabh Jain from IIIT Sonepat, and research scholar Mr. Abhishek Shukla from the University of Delhi. These mentors provided valuable guidance, helping teams to refine their ideas and develop practical solutions for the alternative protein sector.

Challenging Perspectives on Food Production

The hackathon focused on harnessing AI to revolutionize the alternative protein landscape, pushing boundaries in areas such as plant-based food innovation, fermentation technologies, nutritional optimization, food safety, and sustainability. Participants were encouraged to devise innovative, tech-driven solutions aimed at creating a resilient food ecosystem.

Exciting Opportunities and Rewards

The competing teams were vying for impressive prizes totaling ₹1.5 lakh, as well as potential pathways into NIFTEM-K’s Startup Incubation Programme. This hackathon was a clear testament to the institute’s dedication to celebrating interdisciplinary innovation, entrepreneurship, and advancements in sustainable food technology.
