PM Modi Launches Major Infrastructure Projects in Ladakh, Featuring New Leh Airport Terminal

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated five development projects in Ladakh on Thursday, with a total investment of approximately Rs 3,350 crore. The projects encompass airport infrastructure, strategic road connectivity, renewable energy, and water conservation initiatives. Modi emphasized the significance of these projects in enhancing travel, electricity access, and water availability in the region.
Key Projects Launched
The five major projects include a new passenger terminal at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh, the 298-km Nimmu-Padum-Darcha Road, a 9 MW Hanu Hydroelectric Project, India’s first Petroglyph Conservation Park in Leh, and the development of 40 water bodies across 40 villages under Project Amrit Him Sarovar.
The new passenger terminal at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport has been constructed at a cost of Rs 640 crore. Spanning 23,800 square meters, it is designed to accommodate 3.5 million passengers annually. The terminal utilizes geothermal energy to enhance energy efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint, aligning with Ladakh’s ecological considerations.
Infrastructure and Energy Initiatives
The Nimmu-Padum-Darcha Road, built by the Border Roads Organisation, connects Nimmu in Leh to Darcha in Himachal Pradesh through the Zanskar Valley. This road provides an alternative route to Ladakh, supplementing existing highways. Its strategic importance lies in facilitating the movement of personnel and supplies for the armed forces while improving access to essential services for Zanskar residents.
To bolster energy security, Modi inaugurated the 9 MW Hanu small hydroelectric project and a 66 kV double-circuit transmission line. These projects aim to enhance power evacuation infrastructure and improve the reliability of the electricity network in the region, leveraging Ladakh’s hydropower resources.
Cultural and Water Conservation Efforts
The Prime Minister also inaugurated India’s first Petroglyph Conservation Park at Sindhu Ghat in Leh, aimed at protecting the region’s archaeological heritage. The park will safeguard numerous prehistoric rock art sites that provide insights into thousands of years of human history.
Additionally, 40 water bodies were developed across 40 villages under Project Him Sarovar. This initiative addresses Ladakh’s water availability challenges, particularly during the crucial sowing season. It aims to conserve water resources and ensure accessibility, supporting irrigation and agricultural livelihoods in the region.
