Strengthening Ties: New Agreements Enhance Indo-Swiss Cooperation

The recent signing of multiple agreements between India and Switzerland marks a significant step toward enhancing collaboration in various fields. These intend to address migration, professional exchanges, technological innovations, and scientific research, thereby fostering closer bilateral relations.

MoU on Migration and Mobility

A key component of the new agreements is the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Migration and Mobility Partnership (MMP). This MoU focuses on creating a cooperative framework based on equal treatment principles, aiming to prevent irregular migration and combat human trafficking. It introduces provisions for multiple-entry visas valid for up to five years and allows stays of up to six months per visit. Additionally, it incorporates renewable one-year student permits, enhancing opportunities for educational and professional exchanges.

Young Professionals Exchange Agreement

Another major agreement is the Exchange of Young Professionals (YPS), which facilitates the temporary employment of professionals in each other’s countries. This initiative aims to enrich the professional and language skills of the participants. The agreement outlines an exchange of 300 individuals annually per country, with potential expansion to 500. Moreover, it includes a streamlined 30 to 90-day process for verifying each participant’s nationality or residency status.

Collaborative Initiatives in Transportation

The signing of a new MoU between the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER) and India’s Ministry of Road Transport & Highways is set to promote collaboration in transportation and mobility technologies. The agreement will focus on sustainable infrastructure development, particularly in areas such as electric vehicles, circular economies, and innovative transport solutions like ropeways and tunnels.

Research Cooperation Letter of Intent

In a bid to foster scientific collaboration, a Letter of Intent (LoI) was signed between the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). This agreement seeks to bolster long-term cooperation between the two countries’ research communities, encouraging exploratory scientific collaboration and laying the groundwork for future joint research endeavors in mutually beneficial areas.

Innovation and Technology Transfer Arrangement

Additionally, an Implementation Arrangement (IA) was established between the DST and the Zurich University of Applied Sciences. This agreement aims to enhance cooperation in innovation and technology transfer through the Indo–Swiss Academia–Industry Training (AIT India) program. The initiative is designed to support early-stage startups via bilateral exchanges, joint workshops, and networking opportunities, ultimately advancing entrepreneurship between the two nations.

Inaugural Session Announcement

To highlight these partnerships, the inaugural session of the Indo-Swiss Research Flagship event is set to take place in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology. This event marks the beginning of a focused effort to enhance scientific cooperation and innovation between India and Switzerland.
