Karnataka’s Gulbarga Tur Dal Makes Waves in Maldives Market
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has kicked off a significant consignment of 1 MT of GI-tagged Gulbarga Tur Dal from Karnataka to the Maldives on September 24, 2026. This initiative aims to enhance the international market presence of India’s geographically indicated agricultural products while bolstering the roles of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) in agricultural exports.
One of the standout features of this initiative is the better price realization for farmers. The current market price for Gulbarga Tur Dal stands at ₹60 per kilogram, while farmers are projected to earn ₹82 per kilogram through this export-linked channel, translating to over a 30% increase in farmers’ income. This program not only provides FPOs the chance to engage in export-focused markets but also bridges local producers with global buyers.
Exported by M/s Silken Global Exports and Imports in Mysuru, the Gulbarga Tur Dal will be shipped to the Maldives by sea, marking a step forward in agricultural trade for the region. This dal, which has been associated with the Kalaburagi region of Karnataka, received its Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2019, celebrated for its unique taste and quality that holds a vital position in the local agricultural economy.
Karnataka, renowned as one of India’s leading agricultural states, sees pulses playing a crucial role in its dryland farming and rural livelihood. Kalaburagi is particularly noted for its tur cultivation, with Gulbarga Tur Dal symbolizing the agricultural essence of the area.
During the flag-off event, APEDA Chairman Shri Abhishek Dev emphasized the significance of introducing India’s GI-tagged agricultural products to the global marketplace. He stated that the shipment of Gulbarga Tur Dal to the Maldives not only helps forge a global identity for the product but also opens doors for further market expansion.
This export is poised to establish a regular supply route for Gulbarga Tur Dal to the Maldives, providing ongoing market opportunities for both producers and exporters from Karnataka. It represents a strong move toward enhanced earnings for farmers and promotes closer integration of FPOs and farmers with export-oriented value chains.
The milestone event saw the presence of senior APEDA officials, including Senior Consultant Dr. Tarun Bajaj and General Manager Smt. Vinita Sudhanshu, along with industry representatives such as KSPAML’s Managing Director Shri V. Sadashiva and Shri Imran Pasha from M/s Silken Global Exports and Imports.
This initiative aligns with APEDA’s broader efforts to promote the export of GI-tagged and other value-added agricultural products on the international stage and showcases the potential for enhancing the profile of regional agricultural goods in global trade.
