Expansion of Indian Railways: Enhancing Busiest Routes to Accommodate 41% of National Rail Traffic
Indian Railways is set to enhance its capacity on seven high-density routes by expanding tracks to four lanes. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced this initiative, aimed at meeting the increasing demand for passenger and freight services. The expansion will cover approximately 11,000 kilometers, which currently accounts for 41% of total railway traffic while representing only 16% of the railway network.
Seven High Density Routes In Focus
The seven routes targeted for expansion connect major cities across India. They include:
1. Delhi–Howrah
2. Howrah–Chennai
3. Chennai–Mumbai
4. Mumbai–Delhi
5. Delhi–Chennai
6. Mumbai–Howrah
7. Delhi–Guwahati
Vaishnaw emphasized that this four-laning initiative is crucial for increasing capacity and facilitating the movement of passengers and goods. He noted the economic and environmental advantages of enhancing rail transport, which can lower transportation costs and promote cleaner mobility.
Push For Multi-tracking
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved four railway projects with an estimated cost of around Rs. 9,450 crore. These projects include:
– Kharagpur–Bhadrak (Ranital) 4th Line, covering 173 km across West Bengal and Odisha
– Bhadrak–Haridaspur 4th Line, covering 75 km in Odisha
– Gummidipundi–Gudur 3rd and 4th Line, covering 90 km across Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu
– Cuttack–Paradeep (Badabandha) 3rd and 4th Line, covering 72 km in Odisha
These additional lines are expected to enhance network capacity, improve mobility, and increase the operational efficiency of Indian Railways. The multi-tracking efforts aim to alleviate congestion and streamline train operations, benefiting eight districts across West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh.
Indian Railways Modernization Push
Indian Railways is undergoing a significant modernization effort, focusing on infrastructure improvements across various areas, including trains, tracks, and signaling systems. The railway budget has increased dramatically, from Rs 32,000 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 2.78 lakh crore for FY2026-27. Electrification has also surged, reaching 99.6% by July 2026.
The network is introducing newer services and technologies, such as Vande Bharat trains and Amrit Bharat services. As of July 2026, Kavach Version 4.0 has been implemented on 2,633 route kilometers, and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor is under development, designed for speeds of 350 kmph. Additionally, 261 of the 1,340 stations identified under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme have been redeveloped as of July 18, 2026.
