HDFC Bank CEO Announces Departure Plans Following Chair’s Resignation

Sashidhar Jagdishan, Managing Director and CEO of HDFC Bank, has announced he will not seek a third term and will retire on October 26. His six-year tenure has been marked by significant challenges, many of which predated his leadership but became prominent during his time at the helm. Jagdishan informed the bank’s board of his decision during an unscheduled meeting on Saturday.

The board attempted to persuade Jagdishan to reconsider, but he remained firm in his choice. This decision follows months of speculation regarding his candidacy for another term. Reports suggest that Jagdishan’s choice may have been influenced by indications that a full third term was unlikely. HDFC Bank Chairman Rajiv Kumar had reportedly encouraged Jagdishan to take a more assertive approach in addressing the bank’s issues.

The board expressed gratitude for Jagdishan’s leadership, particularly his role in the merger with HDFC Ltd., one of India’s largest corporate mergers. They announced plans to expedite the selection of his successor well before his retirement date. Jagdishan’s decision comes amid a challenging year for HDFC Bank, which has faced scrutiny over governance and operational issues. This follows the resignation of former chairman Atanu Chakraborty, who cited “values and ethics” as reasons for his departure.

In recent months, HDFC Bank has dealt with several controversies, including the firing of three senior executives and penalties for irregularities related to high-risk bonds sold to non-residents. In July, the bank fined Jagdishan and other executives for “business overreach” in securing bulk deposits. Additionally, customer dissatisfaction has risen due to investments in a failed Carlisle fund linked to life insurance policies.

Jagdishan’s tenure began in 2020 under challenging circumstances, including a ban from the Reserve Bank of India on launching new digital products due to technology outages. After the ban was lifted, he managed the complex integration of HDFC Ltd. The merger, initially planned during a period of low interest rates, faced complications due to rising rates and tighter liquidity following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Unlike his predecessor Aditya Puri, Jagdishan maintained a low public profile throughout his tenure. He joined HDFC Bank in 1996 and held various positions, including CFO before becoming CEO in 2020. His departure introduces uncertainty for HDFC Bank, but analysts believe that appointing a strong successor could stabilize the situation.
