Celebrating National Sports Day: A Tribute to Major Dhyan Chand

The nation came alive with sporting spirit on National Sports Day, marking the 121st birth anniversary of the hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. Events took place across the country, with notable festivities at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium near India Gate in New Delhi, attended by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya and Union Minister of Law and Justice Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal. The day focused on promoting fitness through the ‘Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein’ initiative, encouraging all citizens, especially the youth, to dedicate at least one hour for sports and physical activities.

Paying Tribute to a Legend

The celebration kicked off with both ministers honoring Major Dhyan Chand by laying floral tributes at his statue. Hundreds of enthusiastic participants joined in from 8:00 AM onwards, engaging in a variety of physical activities and sports. Dr. Mandaviya emphasized the importance of integrating sports into daily life, stating that this initiative aims to bolster the Fit India Movement by encouraging active participation across the country.

Inspiring a Healthier Future

Speaking at the event, Dr. Mandaviya remarked, “On this significant day, we aim to inspire the youth to step out and play. Lakhs of young individuals have embraced this call across the nation, participating actively in their local grounds.” He expressed hope that this movement would contribute to a healthier society, aligning with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a prosperous and fit nation.

Importance of Physical Fitness

Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal also addressed the crowd, underlining the crucial role of sports and physical fitness in psychological and physical well-being. He shared his personal experiences with various sports, asserting that regular engagement in physical activities alleviates stress and maintains health.
