New Training Initiative Enhances Legal Metrology Standards Nationwide

The Department of Consumer Affairs has launched a groundbreaking initiative aimed at strengthening the skills of Legal Metrology Officers across India. This capacity-building program comes in light of the recent decriminalization measures under the Legal Metrology Act of 2009, alongside significant reforms including the Jan Vishwas reforms, which are designed to facilitate easier business operations.

This specialized training targets frontline Legal Metrology Officers from various States and Union Territories. These officers play a crucial role in enforcing the provisions laid out in the Act and its accompanying Rules, ensuring that the benefits of these reforms reach consumers and businesses at the local level.

The inaugural five-day training session took place in Gujarat from August 10 to 14, 2026. Following that, the Indian Institute of Legal Metrology (IILM) in Ranchi conducted a second phase of training from August 17 to 21, 2026, which was attended by 38 Legal Metrology Officers from Uttar Pradesh. This course primarily aimed to equip officials with the practical skills and updated knowledge required to navigate the evolving regulatory landscape effectively.

Secretary Highlights Importance of Uniform Reforms

Smt. Nidhi Khare, Secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs, graced the valedictory ceremony of the training program for Uttar Pradesh’s officers. During her address, she underlined the critical need for consistent and effective application of the recent Legal Metrology reforms. She emphasized that the role of Legal Metrology significantly affects daily life and the economy.

Khare noted the necessity for accuracy and reliability in measurements as technology progresses and new measuring tools emerge. She argued that robust regulatory frameworks should complement ease of doing business alongside innovation and consumer protection. Moreover, she stressed the importance of these reforms reaching the grassroots level, pointing out that field officers are pivotal in turning policies into tangible improvements for consumers and businesses alike.

The training program encompassed several essential topics, including the provisions of the Legal Metrology Act, the Jan Vishwas reforms, decriminalization processes, and improvements to service delivery. Officers also had the opportunity to address practical hurdles encountered in implementing and enforcing the regulations effectively.

The successful execution of this training initiative highlights the Department of Consumer Affairs’ ongoing commitment to enhancing capacity building, regulatory reforms, and consumer protection through a modernized and technology-driven Legal Metrology system.
