Mumbai Emerges as the Sole Indian City in Global Work From Anywhere Index, Outranking London and Miami
Mumbai has made its mark as the only Indian city featured in IWG’s 2026 Work From Anywhere Index, scoring 77 and surpassing major global cities like London and Miami. The index evaluates cities based on their suitability for remote work, considering factors such as climate, broadband speed, accommodation, transport, food, culture, and the availability of flexible workspaces. Mumbai’s debut in this annual ranking highlights its growing appeal as a destination for professionals seeking to blend work and travel.
Mumbai’s Strong Performance
Mumbai’s ranking is attributed to its favorable transport costs, availability of co-working spaces, and overall climate. However, the city received lower scores in areas such as broadband speed, local event availability, and the happiness index. This recognition comes amid India’s expanding flexible workspace market, which has been rated highly in a report by Cushman & Wakefield. India achieved a perfect score of 100 on the flexible workspace maturity index, outperforming the UK, France, and the US.
As of the second quarter of 2025, India held the title of the largest flexible office market in the Asia-Pacific region, with 79.7 million square feet of flexible office space across its top eight cities. Projections indicate that this figure will exceed 100 million square feet by 2026.
Changing Work and Travel Dynamics
Mumbai’s inclusion in the index reflects a broader trend where Work From Anywhere policies are reshaping travel plans. Research commissioned by IWG revealed that 51% of surveyed workers reported that their employers offered such policies. The findings indicated that 90% of respondents felt that Work From Anywhere improved their work-life balance, while 80% noted an increase in productivity. Additionally, 62% expressed a willingness to change jobs for a better Work From Anywhere policy.
The flexibility afforded by these policies is influencing vacation habits. Nearly half of the respondents, or 48%, indicated plans to extend holidays by working remotely in 2026. Furthermore, 46% reported a greater likelihood of doing so compared to the previous year, and 43% admitted to having worked remotely from a holiday destination without using annual leave.
