Trump’s 50% Tariff Targets Over 550 Canadian Goods, From Honey to Hockey Sticks
More than 550 Canadian goods are now subject to a 50% tariff imposed by the United States, effective Saturday. This new duty affects a wide range of products, including honey, makeup, kitchenware, and sports equipment. The tariffs are expected to impact approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian exports, which represents about 5% of the total $381.92 billion in goods Canada exported to the U.S. last year.
Scope of the Tariff
The list of affected items includes everyday products such as cosmetics, golf equipment, and household items. Additionally, it encompasses agricultural products like honey, seeds, and fresh flowers. Other items include furniture knobs, lighting fixtures, and various kitchenware. The broad nature of the tariff means its effects could ripple across multiple shopping categories and construction expenses.
Rationale Behind the Tariff
The tariffs were enacted under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, a provision that allows for import taxes of up to 50% on goods from countries accused of discriminating against U.S. businesses. President Trump has claimed that Canada discriminated against U.S. products, particularly in the automotive, alcohol, and dairy sectors. However, the latest tariffs extend well beyond these categories, excluding cars and auto parts, which remain central to ongoing negotiations.
Canada’s Response
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada would retaliate with its own measures starting September 8. These countermeasures will target U.S. steel, dairy, appliances, and agricultural equipment. Ontario Premier Doug Ford indicated that “everything is on the table” regarding potential responses, including cutting off electricity and critical minerals to the U.S. if the trade conflict escalates. Trump has threatened to increase tariffs on Canadian automobiles and steel to 50% by January 1, 2027.
