Canada is preparing to announce retaliatory tariffs against the United States, escalating a trade dispute that has worsened following the collapse of negotiations between Ottawa and the Trump administration. An official familiar with the plans confirmed to The Associated Press that the announcement is expected on Tuesday. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney indicated that Ottawa might shift from matching U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar to more targeted measures aimed at protecting Canadian workers and businesses.
The tensions intensified after U.S. President Donald Trump warned Canadian leaders to “fall in line” or face consequences “far WORSE” than existing tariffs. Trump has threatened to impose new 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts, and steel. Carney accused the U.S. of attempting to subordinate Canada, stating that the trade demands from Washington confirmed Ottawa’s fears of an effort to dismantle key Canadian industries.
Trade Negotiations Break Down
Carney expressed strong opposition to U.S. trade tactics, saying, “An attitude at the negotiation table that Canada is a subsidiary of the United States is not something we’re going to accept.” He further elaborated that the negotiations revealed American intentions to undermine major Canadian sectors, including autos, steel, and aluminum. Carney’s remarks followed his decision to walk away from trade talks with the Trump administration, which prompted Trump to threaten tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods.
Carney also raised concerns about the reliability of the U.S. as a trading partner, noting that Canada is seeking dependable partners “everywhere in the world, except in the United States. Except in the United States. And Russia.”
Trump Criticizes Canadian Leadership
On Monday, Trump renewed his criticism of Canada, accusing it of imposing unfair tariffs on U.S. farmers and warning of further actions against its automotive sector. He claimed that Canada has been “ripping off the United States of America for years” due to what he described as “ridiculously high tariffs” on American agricultural products. Carney warned that proposed U.S. measures targeting the auto sector could gradually undermine Canadian vehicle production, emphasizing the deep integration of the automotive industry between the two countries.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford stated that Canadians are prepared to endure economic pressure rather than yield to U.S. demands. “We’re all in,” Ford declared, indicating a readiness for an economic confrontation. Trump responded by personally attacking Ford, labeling him “the less charismatic, intelligent, and overall unimpressive brother of the late, great, Rob Ford,” while referring to Prime Minister Carney as “Governor Carney.” Ford dismissed Trump’s comments, asserting that insults from the U.S. president do not affect him. Despite their political differences, both Carney and Ford have united in their opposition to Trump’s trade pressures.
