Iran Imposes Blacklist on 45 Tankers Following Strait of Hormuz Regulations Amid Renewed US Sanctions Threat
Iran has blacklisted 45 tankers for allegedly violating its regulations for crossing the Strait of Hormuz. The Persian Gulf Strait Authority announced that vessels conducting ship-to-ship transfers with these tankers could also face penalties. This move escalates tensions in the region amid ongoing conflicts and fresh threats of U.S. sanctions.
The authority stated that the blacklisted vessels could be fined, detained, and have their cargoes confiscated. The list includes various types of tankers, such as very large crude carriers and liquefied natural gas vessels. Notable companies affected include the UAE’s ADNOC Logistics and Shipping, ADNOC subsidiary Navig8 Tankers, and Saudi Arabia’s national shipping carrier Bahri. Other companies on the list are Klaveness Ship Management, Stolt Tankers, and South Korea’s Sinokor.

Iran warns of harsh response to US sanctions
Iran’s authority indicated that ships involved in transfers with the blacklisted vessels could also be added to the list. The specific rules allegedly breached were not disclosed. Iran has previously stated that shipowners must obtain clearance to transit the strait and pay for security and other services. This warning follows recent threats from the U.S. of imposing “the toughest sanctions in history.”
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei cautioned that any escalation would have consequences. He stated, “Our hands are not tied.” Additionally, Iran’s new top security official warned that support for U.S. sanctions by any country would be viewed as an “act of war.”
Hormuz remains choked
The U.S. has implemented a naval blockade against Iran-related shipping. Prior to the conflict, the Gulf supplied about 20% of the world’s daily crude oil and liquefied natural gas. Iran has asserted that reopening the strait would require lifting the U.S. blockade, withdrawing U.S. forces from the region, and reparations for war damage.
Iran has also engaged in discussions with Oman regarding joint management of the waterway. U.S.-coordinated efforts to facilitate tanker movement through the strait have helped restore some exports. U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright reported that the “7-day average of oil leaving the Strait is over 8 million barrels a day.” Iran’s currency hit a record low on Monday ahead of the anticipated U.S. announcement. ADNOC declined to comment, while other shipping firms did not respond to requests for comment.
