Vice President Launches India’s First Non-GMO Popcorn Maize Seed
In a landmark event for Indian agriculture, Vice-President Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan unveiled the country’s first non-GMO, high-expansion popcorn maize hybrid seed in Musunuru, Eluru district, Andhra Pradesh. This pioneering initiative, developed by Gourmet Popcornica, is being hailed as a vital move towards achieving self-reliance in agriculture as part of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.
During the launch, Radhakrishnan emphasized the crucial role of farmers in shaping India’s agricultural landscape and cultural heritage. He expressed optimism that technological advancements and the development of indigenous seeds would enhance the resilience and productivity of the agricultural sector.
Prior to this launch, India primarily relied on imported hybrid technology for top-quality popcorn maize. The introduction of this new indigenous hybrid seed signifies a forward leap in reducing dependence on foreign imports and conserving precious foreign exchange, according to the Vice-President. He praised both Gourmet Popcornica and local farmers for their initiative in cultivating an Indian solution for Indian soil, positioning it favorably in the international market.
Radhakrishnan also acknowledged various farmer-centered programs initiated by the Union Government, such as PM-KISAN, PM Fasal Bima Yojana, and the National Food Security and Nutrition Mission. He commended Andhra Pradesh’s Chief Minister Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu for his progressive strategies in enhancing agriculture and rural development, which include support systems like Rythu Bazaars and the promotion of horticulture and natural farming.
The Vice-President highlighted the extensive collaboration between farmers and enterprises, noting that over 17,500 farmers across eight states are involved in the Gourmet Popcornica project, cultivating nearly 40,000 acres. He recognized the journey of Shri S.B.P. Pattabhi Rama Rao and Gourmet Popcornica, which has evolved from a local business into a significant player in popcorn maize processing, providing better market access and income for numerous farming families.
Radhakrishnan articulated his vision of building a developed India from the grassroots, underscoring the vital contributions of farmers, scientists, and entrepreneurs. He illustrated how innovation and partnerships in agriculture can foster a self-reliant and globally competitive sector, as exemplified by the Musunuru initiative.
Upon arrival, the Vice-President toured the Gourmet Popcornica factory and cold storage facility, gaining insights into the maize processing techniques, quality control measures, packaging, and storage logistics.
The launch event saw attendance from various dignitaries, including Andhra Pradesh Governor Shri S. Abdul Nazeer, Chief Minister Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu, and several government ministers, alongside representatives from Gourmet Popcornica.
